Dimming/switching off Lowestoft's Streetlights « Posted: 15 July 2011 at 12:27 PM »

Suffolk CC have published their plans to dim or switch off some of suffolk streetlights overnight between midnight and 5:30am in attempt to save money. This was in the journal this morning link. More extensive details can be found on suffolk CC's website streetlighting page

A more in depth PDF 'FAQ' document can be accessed HERE

It appears this 'intelligent streetlighting' (im sure it doesnt mean you can have a conversation with them as you walk down the street...), only side roads with columns upto 6 metres will apply for now and busy areas such as roundabouts, main roads and areas with a night time economy wont be included. The technology will be 'intelligent' meaning the photocells located on top of each lantern can 'learn' what time of night it is and what time of the year it is and illuminate/switch off or dim themselves.

What do you think?

Is it a good idea? Does having them on all night give peace of mind or just do they annoyingly light your curtains when trying to sleep?

Personally I would like less street lighting and more ability to see the stars I think everyhere is too brightly lit and as there is one just outside my front bedroom window I sleep at the back Not sure it makes too much differenc to crime doesnt look as if the figures went down after they started leavnig them on all night they used to go off midnight to 5am

The burglary rate might just go down - as they won't be able to see without a torch which would look more suspicious at that time of night and would draw attention to that one place where it is shining.

I am all for it.

It horrifies me when you see pictures from space and you notice all the power that is wasted lighting up the world at night.

It would be good to have a return to darkness, the media seem to get all paranoid about crime rates but the majority of people seem to think theres nothing wrong with having some darkness in the middle of the night. I agree i thnink having lights on actually helps burgulars see what they are doing and see if theres anyone about seeing what they are doing.

Maybe the birds will stop getting confused too and stop singing at all hours!

I have seen preparations for this, some lanterns have noticeable large white photocells with pointy spikes on them, they can be seen on the lights on the road outside the triangle tavern and matressman, and also on my estate up at gunton. I do sometimes come home late from a night out so will have to remember to expect it to be dark sometime soon as i approach my road after a few pints!

I dont know about nowadays, but apparently it costs alot of money to switch highway lighting off, and a large sum to turn them back on.  It would be interesting to see the costs vs savings in a spreadsheet or graph.

On the PDF they make it clear there will be a saving, obviously there is a financial outlay with upgrading the lanterns with the Telesna photocells but with energy prices as they are in this day and age going up and up, over time the savings made will increase accordingly.

Reading the product catalogue for these devices im amazed how advanced they are and how much they can do.
