Media Player (OS W7) Problems « Posted: 08 July 2011 at 07:02 PM »

Don’t use this device very often but - now I do need it - it’s playing up!

Although the PC is setup to always used MP for CDs/DVDs - when I use either - nothing happens (although it used to automatically start playing the disc).

If I “open” MP - it opens on screen but with no text or anything it’s just white with that annoying little blue ring spinning around, and around ad infinitum.

Thought I’d delete it, and download it, but appears that it’s only available with W7 - so not downloadable!

Any thoughts please?

Can you go to the Microsoft site and download the latest version - they release them quite regularly  - you may not be on the latest version which means you can overwrite the old one.

I would have said that maybe another player has claimed first use of your media files but the blue spinning thingy seems to indicate that it is trying to play?

Dave: Tried that yesterday - but it made no difference.

Frankie: Whilst I do have “Real” (which I don’t use - obviously time to delete it!) Media Player is set as the main player.  Newsflash: Have just deleted Real - but MP is still sulking!
As I mentioned in my first post - it appears that MP12 comes with W7 - and, according to the MS website, it cannot be downloaded.

Wonder if I delete v.12 and install v.11 - would it work (Knowing my luck it won’t!).  Or perhaps I need to install another player (but not “Real”!).  Some serious thinking to do - and no, I'm not buying a new PC!!

One problem with this is, of course, as MP is not working - won’t be able to install anything from disk.  crybaby2

Download and install vlc instead. It's far better and will play many more formats than MP.
And it's free!

Worth a try to see if you like it.

Thanks for that Stu - just one question - will it deal with program disks?  I have a program to install from a disk.

Thanks

I'm confused by why you need Media Player to install programs. Windows Explorer (My Computer) is surely where you view files and install programs?

Sorry - I’m non-tekkie!  I assumed (perhaps wrongly) that when I need to install a program that I have purchased - and it has an installation disk, I place that into the PC’s disk tray.  I thought that the Media Player might have some involvement in the installation process but - that’s guesswork on my part.
Fortunately, a friend’s visiting tomorrow morning and is more knowledgeable on the subject. Hopefully, he can advise me.

Trigger, when you attempt to install a programe you are using different software to that used when you want to play a DVD/CD or music already resident on your computer.   The disc drive (hardware) uses whatever program (software) is necessary to perform the task being 'requested'.    Does that make sense?   icon_scratch

Yes it does - thanks!  I'll wait and talk it over tomorrow morning - and perhaps I'll be able to explain myself better face-to-face than trying to explain it on here.

PS My printer's now decided now decided not to print (I use Word) and if I try and print, a pop-up message appears: “The printer is offline.  Check the printer cable is connected and the printer power is on."  The machine is on, the connecting cable is still there, nothing's been changed/unplugged . . . . I HATE computers   Grin

You seem to be having a bad week, Trigger.   I have had those problems in the past.  I now use my printer with bluetooth as it is upstairs in a spare room (it's A3 and too big to have in the same room as my laptop).   I suggest you swich off the printer and close the computer down, then switch on the printer before restarting your computer and see if that solves the problem.   Also check in the printer settings that the printer you are using is showing as the default printer.

No, it's just these last couple of days!  crybaby2

Will try the course of action you suggest - if you hear a loud scream, you'll know it hasn't worked!!

May sneak onto the bridge after midnight tonihgt and drop these "devices" over the edge . . . .  evil6

BB: Followed your instructions - also ran a Cannon printer (MP560) test and - wait for it - the printer is working!!  So - many thanks for suggestion - I've two letters that should have gone today, have just printed them off (in case it doesn't work tomorrow!  Thanks again.

Now I've just got to get this MP working - perhaps it's a "Terminal" case!  Perhaps I'll have to get the PC checked over.

Re: Media Player (OS W7) Problems « Reply #15 Posted: 10 July 2011 at 08:16 AM »

Just a question on this subject of my Media Player (MS) - I have downloaded VCL - but cannot get it to play CDs nor DVDs.  Whilst I realise that the problem could well be to do with the “Big Nut” sitting in front of the computer - I do get the impression that, for some reason, the MP device isn’t “talking to” / “connecting with” the disc.  I’m hoping that my “explanation” makes a bit of sense!

If this is what’s happening - then it suggests that my PC may need to undergo surgery!  crybaby2

If you open My Computer can you see the DVD drive listed, (maybe Drive D:\ ) ?
If you put a DVD in the drive, after a few seconds, does the name of the disc appear beside the DVD in the My Computer window?

It's possible your DVD drive has failed. It's a quick and cheap job to get replaced if that is the case.

Thanks Paul - that's what I needed to know.  Followed your clear instructions - and MP doesn't "read" the disc (tried CD & DVD).  So, it'll have to be hospitalised!  crybaby2

Much appreciated
