The new bridge is going to be next to the bascule bridge. How on earth does that make cycle journeys more attractive or shorter??

On that suffolk CC document Dave linked to, theres a map near the bottom showing the location and its right next to the existing bascule bridge is. I would have been a lot more supportive if it was much more central but now it seems rather a pointless waste.
The same report does correctly say what a lot of car users bury their heads in the sand over that a lot of the congestion is down to local travel for short journeys which a car for most is unnecessary.

That is exactly the mindset that the government is trying to change. Rather than think about 'what is best for me', think about 'what is best for the town'. Everyone driving a few miles to work could be classed as easy, or it could be classed as extravagant. I cycle, both because I can't afford to run a car, but also because it is good exercise and also good for the environment. Cycling is good for the town, and if many more of us chose alternative methods of transport, it would be good for the environment and Lowestoft in general.
Let's face reality - another road bridge just isn't going to happen anytime soon, there simply isn't the money available. If we want to try and resolve the issues that Lowestoft faces, we need to rethink things, and rather than blame others we need to take action, ourselves. It may not be as 'nice' as we are used to, but it is still better than sitting in gridlock for hours each day!

The report also mentions a revamp of Station Square, although not much detail. Mentioning this in an official report is one step closer to actually getting something done, which I am all for.

When are the planners in this area going to get their priorities right? Before any more pedestrian bridges/cycle paths etc., are build then they should put their minds and money to completing the last section of the northern spine road (from the Parkhill/Millennium Way roundabout to the A12 near Corton Long Lane). This is an absolute necessity that will bring long awaited relief to the residents of the Parkhill development They have endured the steady flow of heavy traffic passing through the estate for far too long, on roads that were not meant to be part of a major thoroughfare. I noticed that they have just completed a new cycle track on Peto Way (nothern side of the Normanston Park roundadout) - the materials they used there could have done a fair stretch of the last part of the northern spine road!! By completing this last section of road will also allow long awaited weight restrictions to be imposed on the B1375 through Oulton village by diverting heavy vehicles via the completed Milllennium Way/Peto Way route.

We are all too fat, we are all heading into fuel poverty, we all get too little exercise we are all moaning about having less disposable income so anything that encourages more leg movement seems good to me however it will have to be sold attractively to people to get the averge lazy legs working.
If its really true that the vast majority of local journeys are 3 miles or less then we should all be ashamed of ourselves cos its barely worth starting the engine for that distance unless of course there are elderly or ill people involved

It is hoped the new bridge, which should be completed by 2015, will entice people to give up their cars to relieve pressure on Lowestoft’s heavily congested two crossings over Lake Lothing as it will make it easier for them to reach the town centre by foot or bicycle instead. I'm intrigued. Are people going to walk to the bridge instead of using their cars? How are they going to avoid the delays caused by bridgers if the bridge itself will be closed for boats to pass. Who thought of this idea - a person who sells bridges by any chance?

Yes Frankie if the survey is right and it probably is and 80% of car journeys are for short trips why cant people leave their cars at home and cycle or walk I know so many people who will get their cars out to go from say Carlton Rd to town - a mile, mile and a half I m only using Carlton Rd as an example and a road you will know I have three colleagues living around one mile from work who all use their cars to go to and from work in town. None of them have any other reason (not dropping small children or aged grannies off anywhere or needing their car once they are at work) but they also pay huge annual fees to belong to gyms to help stop them getting sluggish and putting weight on --uh something sound silly here
Children are taken on short journeys to school - in cars why?

So what happend to the 1million cycle/pedestrian bridge that they were going to build over oulton broad? the one that was to run along side the railway bridge and link up to Normanston Park?
Now all of a sudden the same bridge costs 6.2 million and they are going to put it next to the basule bridge! and will ease congestion, that Guy Mcgregor from SCC has not got a clue what he is doing he just continues to make a mess of Lowestoft the problem will not change even if they build 10 of them little bridges.

Frankly I think that this sounds like a better idea than an Oulton Broad bridge. It is more central to Lowestoft, meaning it will benefit the Lowestoft town and its residents more. If anything, hopefully it would also benefit Oulton Broad by easing the foot congestion on their bridge.
I was thinking, maybe it will cost more in part because the purchase of land in central Lowestoft would be more?
And I'm still recovering from yet another topic that FC and I agree on!
