Fifth Crossing gets Closer
« Posted: 05 July 2011 at 05:45 PM »
It would seem that Lowestoft's fifth crossing has got closer to reality thanks to a DfT investment.
"In Lowestoft, there’s partial funding for a new swing bridge for pedestrians and cyclists which the DfT says will enable residents and visitors to travel more easily within the town, targeting a congestion pinch point to bring additional footfall to local shops."

It is part of a £6.25m scheme it appears.
A 4m wide cycle/pedestrian bridge to be operational by2015. I would guess a £1m bridge and the rest on 4 years of overly consulting on proceedure and design options and planning meetings ;-) and a new bus stop. and new road layout and some new sign posts...

You haven't budgeted for traffic cones. That will have come out of the £1 million road accounts I guess.

Spent around 10 minutes looking through this PDF - very useful thank you.
I am all in support of it. Most people when thinking rationally know that this country is at maximum capacity with regards to car use, and there simply isn't the available land to build more motorways etc. The best way out of the infrastructure mess is to reduce car use nationwide. In order to do this, people have to change their mindset, as most people have generally become used to driving wherever they need to go.
If the statistics in this report are to be believed, then Lowestoft is a prime example of this. Apparently, 80% of the workers in Lowestoft are also residents. Of that 80%, around two thirds drive 3 miles or less to work - journeys that for the most part could easily be done instead by walking or cycling or by bus/train. In my opinion, if you cut out 50% of the total car traffic across the bridges, you would easily have a sustainable future road network in and around Lowestoft. These same reductions could then be using this new cycle/walking bridge, which will be far cheaper to build than a road bridge.
I am intrigued as to the design of this bridge. Whether walking and cycling sections will be separate or together as per the bypass. If together, pedestrians will still have to be aware of their environment, as several times on the bypass I have had near misses from pedestrians who walk out in the cycle path without looking.
However, this document is slightly worrying to me. It contains a few inaccuracies, which are minor but shows a lack of proof reading. It mentions that cycling is not currently allowed on the path of the current bridge - but this is contrary to both byelaws and also current road signs. I also see one copy-and-paste error with the name of an organisation copied in two paragraphs, instead of being changed in the 2nd paragraph. This may all be minor, but it shows that there may be other errors in the document that I am unaware of, which means we cannot wholly trust the content within.
