I bought my current PC from PC World - and I received excellent help and advice from the young man who dealt with me. He even pointed out, when I told him the machine I had chosen, that another machine - which was slightly cheaper, had some better parts to it - and that was the machine I bought. About a month later I decided to upgrade my square flat screen monitor and again went to PC World - and had very good help and advice from the guy who dealt with me. In both these instances I had gone to a local company - who, in each case hadn’t got the product I was interested in - but they assured me stock was due in later that day or the next day. They took my details and phone number - assured me they would phone me when the items arrived. I am still awaiting a call back for both items -and this is some two years later! That’s why, for these two items I didn’t shop locally.
For my printer cartridges, I’ve always bought them from a company called Tonik who, providing you phone you order before 2pm (I think) - they arrive next day. I’ve always purchased the branded cartridges for my printer having had a couple of disasters with the cheapos. However, a few months ago, I bought their own compatible ones - and these have worked fine - I cannot tell any difference.

Obviously, one can only speak as one finds. I've heard some disastrous tales from others who have shopped there.
A few years ago I decided to get a laptop, went to a well-known store (who I won't name) in Norwich. I discussed laptops with the sales person - and then said, pointing to those on display - "Are there any of these that you could recommend?" His response was "They're all about the same - so just pick one," and he walked off! If I remember rightly his name was John Lewis. I complained to the department's Manager before leaving - and told him that I would purchase one elsewhere - which I did.

I'm afraid I'm contributing to the death of local CD and computer shops, because I buy 99% of my music, computer components and printer cartridges online from either ebuyer.com or my favourite supplier amazon.co.uk. I've used Amazon for over 10 years now!
I always buy branded printer cartridges. When I worked for a local computer shop, I saw several printers that were written off due to leaking OEM cartridges. I have to say that we don't print very much these days though. The odd gig poster and a few letters, that's about it. I avoid the cheapest printers with high running costs too. Our current HP Inkjet has individual cartridges for colours and black. The high capacity black cartridge last for ages.
