I've learnt to take everything life throws at me!!
'Debating Chambers', 'Debate Lowestoft Issues' and 'News'
« Posted: 23 June 2011 at 09:24 PM »
It has been noticed that the ‘Debate Lowestoft Issues’ and ‘Debating Chambers’ forums are becoming inundated with topics which, in reality, are not debating issues, but are merely items of news. The admin team have been discussing this and it has been agreed that there should be a new board covering News Items, initially with two new topics, which will run in a similar manner to some of the topics in
‘The Lounge’
and run for a month before being locked and replaced with a new one for the subsequent month, and so-on. After the topic has been locked for a month it will then be removed from the forum as by then it will be stale news!
The Board will be called
‘In The News’
and the two topics will be
‘July – Interesting Local News’
and
‘July - Interesting National & International News’
Users are requested to use these two topics for appropriate news articles as opposed to using the two debating forums mentioned above. It is suggested that the news item is started with the headline from the news article, followed by the initial two or three paragraphs from the article, depending on their length, followed by a URL link to the full story. Naturally, if the poster wishes to add some comments they can do, remembering that it is not intended to be a debating issue.
Debating Forums
.
With regards to the two debating forums mentioned above, it is suggested that any new debating topics be started with the opening ‘argument’ for debate being written by the person starting the debate
‘in their own words’
, followed by a
URL link
, if there is one, to add dimension to the debate. This is opposed to just ‘copying and pasting’ a news article followed by a few words of agreement or otherwise, which seems to be the ‘norm’ at the moment.
We are sure there will be some members who will not agree with this different approach, but if you look at many of the topics in the debating forums you will see what we mean. Let’s give it a try and see how it goes!
It may be a couple of days before we get the new ‘News’ board and topics up and running, so please bear with us. As the first ones will be set up during the last week of June, they will run until the end of July, when the August ones will take over.
The moderators will monitor these topics and any new ones which are thought to be just items of news will either be moved to the appropriate board or deleted.
