One answer to that is those who live there like it the way it is now, & if you don't like it you don't go there.

A bit like what was said about this site when JJ said words to the effect that it wasn't as good as it used to be - in answer to SD's question why certain people didn't post here any more.

Lowestoft High Street is a bit like Lowestoft Online, a generally nice place, in gentle decline for a number of years now, a few good features but not really making the most of itself.

But to get a wider response & maybe even get a discusion going can I suggest a slight revision to how the question is presented?  For instance asking what people think are the good & bad points about the High Street, or offering your own suggestions to improve it - that people can agree or disagree with.

It's been found you usually get a better response if you give some input to get people going.  So I'm going to throw the question partly back to you & ask what used to be nice about it - & when & why that niceness stopped.

Personally I would say we are our own worst enemies.

The decline in high streets across England seems to have coincided with the rise of the supermakets such as Asda, Tescos etc.  As a people we like to think that we would prefer the old fashioned butcher, baker ironmonger etc.  However, we are no longer prepared to pay the independant shop prices, which due to lack of purchasing power means that their prices are around double that of supermarkets.  If their custom drops below a certain point, their survival becomes almost impossible.  In order to change this, we need to change our own 'wants and needs' and be prepared to pay for items.

The problem with this is that many people - myself included - can no longer afford to do this.  I only buy from the 'basics' range of supermarkets, because I simply cant afford to do otherwise.  To buy from an independant shop would mean that other items would have to be dropped from the budget.  Times have sadly changed, and the cost of living has risen far above that of the working wage.

we run a little card shop on the high street and gone are the days when you could stand outside with a cuppa talking to the people walking by because there not there.. i think its because there is no bus to the old part of the town any more and its a long walk from the bus station for some people.

Maybe we could have some new signage, with WDC and/or LTC having a series of distinctive signposts to 'Olde Lowestoft'.  Some brighter better information on these posts giving Lowestoft history would also be useful, alongside maybe suggested walking treks.  Unless you live around here, most people have never even heard of the Scores!

WDC did do that a few years back and there were scores trails also lots of historical plaques on various building I have a nice leaflet somewhere with Scores info on it it certainly was boosted up as the historical part but that seems to have died away although the plaques and info are still there I think
