Mobility Scooter capital of East Anglia? « Posted: 06 June 2011 at 09:48 AM »

Hi All    hello
Just a few lines to let you know that I am still around. I am very busy with my sick wife all of the time, however we did manage a few days last week in Lowiestoft. This was for my mothers 97 birthday, which she spent in Lowestoft hospital recovering from a broken hip. Sad

What caught my attention most was the proliferation of mobilty scooters up and down London Road. I was sat having coffee  outside Hills bakery and in the space of an hour I counted a total of 30 scooters going past. All shapes all sizes all seeming to come from East coast mobility. One or two others of some very exotic styles obviously private.
Then to cap it all at the hospital there is a space to park miobility scooters.
Now being a mobility scooter owner my self I am used to seeing maybe 2 or 3 others in and around my town, but Lowestoft really does seem to be the Mobility Scooter  capital of East Anglia, wish I had brought mine with me instead of my walker!! Roll Eyes

All joking aside I had a great couple of days there, though my one big disappointment was my fish & chips from Hollingsworth Road where in the past I have had a good expeerience , this time very poor quality.  Angry

Regards

Yes Snowdrop
I do agree. A lot of supposed mobility users are very rude and arrogant on scooters. I have a two speed one and am taxed and insured for road use also have had a test to see if I am a capable driver.
See me on mine on Veterans day last year

Hi Funkychick
Yes she is alright but not as  well as she could be. She had a fall in Barwood ward on Saturday night and broke her femur again. another trip to JP a phone call to me at 03:45 to tell me. JP surgeons have decided that no intervention will be done and she is back in Barwood ward on 6 weeks in bed. She will hate that. She is always trying to get out and home. By the way do you know her

Do you mean one of these. They are available in Benidorm for 3000 euro's. That is £2678 at todays rate.I would love one.  But it would be long drive home

Mobility scooters were originally designed for the disabled, and rightly so. It gives a degree of freedom to those less fortunate than we who are in good health. However, because there are no laws restricting their use, every lazy and indolent so and so is now using them instead of their legs.
One day in ASDA a woman arrived on a huge scooter, parked in the foyer and hopped off. She walked briskly to collect a trolley and walked around the shop collecting a barrow load. She then returned to the scooter and loaded up a large basket on board, got on and drove off.
Yes, I was waiting for someone so was able to witness this.
No doubt someone will say I could not know what her disability was. True.

Just to be a devils advocate....

My father has multiple sclerosis, and uses both mibility scooters and wheelchairs.  It has progressed to the point where his walking is very bad, but at the start of the diagnosis, his walking generally was quite good.  It was only when he had relapses or episodes that he couldnt walk or even stand up straight.  Seeing him on a good day, you would have thought he was fit and healthy.  On a bad day, he cannot even move his legs to get out of bed.  Just to make things better, the DWP is trying to say that he should not get disability benefit as his disability is not active 100% of the time.  Thankfully, his doctors are on his side.

Not everyone who 'looks' fit and healthy are able to do what they do all the time.  The pain that they go through may well be hidden on the inside.

In Cromer and Sheringham where most are very retired (or tourists), you rarely, if ever see them. The words lazy and/or overweight spring to mind when you mention mobility scooters in Lowestoft. Not sure why?..

Good report there SD - can well imagine your frustration!

Interestingly, with these scooters:
“Under current legislation relating to powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters, you are not required to take out insurance cover for your mobility vehicle. However, research commissioned by the Department Of Transport to review the safety and legislation involving Class 2 and Class 3 powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters (for definitions see below) has recommended that third party insurance cover should be compulsory for all users.” Link to full report.

I found this news article from April 2010:

“Pensioner to sell home to pay scooter accident costs
A disabled pensioner claims she and her family are on the verge of losing their home following an accident involving a mobility scooter at a supermarket.
Gloria Brown, 61, from Rhyl, Denbighshire, said a scooter collided with hers, injuring a staff member at the town's Morrisons store in 2005.
A county court hearing later found her liable and she was ordered to pay costs and compensation of more than £16,000.” Link to full article.

Read the news article, and frankjly dont believe a word that woman has said.  The County Court is not allowed to make people pay other parties costs unless (a) their actions in court have been extremely wrong, or (b) it was not in the small claims track.

From my own experience in these courts, judges would also not rule straight away regarding payment terms - this is instead dealt with at a later hearing, and almost definitely she would have been allowed to pay at a monthly level.  Instead, I wonder whether she refused at court to pay anything monthly, and I wonder whether she may have been abusive in the initial court hearing.  Certainly, I know for sure that although she could not get legal representation in court itself, she would definitely have been able to get legal advice free of charge before the hearing.  She would also have been able to have had help from the Citizens Advice Bureau; somebody would have helped her in court - known as being a McKenzie Friend.

In my work, scooters are a nuisance, and unfortunately part of life.

Maybe mobility scooter are the new cyclists?

They need to have tax, insurance and licences, never mind how little harm they cause. After all, if they were not poor they would be driving cars, wouldn't they? Wink

Some years ago now my father[ who is no longer with us]decided he wanted a disability scooter. As my Dad had dementia and severe glucomo the family said no way but unbeknown to us Mum and Dad got a salesman round. On our next visit it was standing in the back yard.In his younger years my Dad was a very intelligent man and a very experienced driver but in his eighties he just wasnt capable of driving any thing. As they lived right next to the broads we were terrified he would forget where the brake was and end up in the water. My point is he was sold the scooter with no input from the family no test run ,no medical conditions taken into consideration, no insurance the list goes on.Needless to say we had to stop him using it.I had a row with the salesman but he insisted he was not at fault.I do think the regulations should be tightened up and all medical problems looked into.
