Marmite made illegal in Denmark « Posted: 24 May 2011 at 10:38 PM »

According to the marketing slogan it is a taste that you either love or hate. But Danes will no longer get the chance to make up their own minds on Marmite after the British delicacy was banned under food safety laws.
The strongly flavoured dark brown spread made from brewer's yeast has joined Rice Crispies, Shreddies, Horlicks and Ovaltine prohibited in Denmark under legislation forbidding the sale of food products with added vitamins as threat to public health. Link

Let’s hope they make it illegal here too! (Runs and hides behind settee!)

Judging by the very last sentence of the report it looks like it's all down to the say-so of one person, quote:

'A spokesman for the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration said: "I cannot comment on the Marmite case because our expert is away until Thursday." '

I can see a business opportunity here. Smuggling Marmite to Denmark.

Marmite Mmmmmm

I remember when I was young, my mother used to buy Marmite in large size catering tins and us kids used to love Marmite lollies. (stick a spoon in the tin and lick the Marmite).

Last year, they produced a Special Edition - Champagne and Marmite! How ridiculous is that?  Could anyone taste Champagne in that over-powering brown sludge - which raises the question - "Why would they want to?"  Wink

Here are 10 things you maybe did not know about the "love it or hate it" spread.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13541148

For example: “Marmite may keep away mosquitoes. Several newspapers, including the Guardian, the Sun and the Daily Telegraph, have claimed the yeasty spread to be the perfect defence against mozzies.”

But who would want to walk around smelling like Marmite?  evil6

"The product that was to become Marmite was invented by accident in the late 19th Century when German scientist Justus von Liebig discovered that brewer's yeast could be concentrated, bottled and eaten. In 1902 The Marmite Food Extract Company was formed in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, England by the Gilmour family, with Marmite as its main product and Burton as the site of the first factory."

Now that the topic has swung to rice products - I am a Mueller Rice addict. I consume one per weekday (in my packed lunch) and have done so for many, many years. There are quite a few varieties but I prefer the original -served cold ( I've never actually tried them hot). Marmite is definitely not to my liking!.

I hate to admit this, but I am the same.  I do not 'like' Marmite, nor do I specifically hate it.  I will eat it, and 'tolerate' it, but not my choice of food spreads.  'Not keen' is my option too.

The whole world is falling apart. We now have 3 options, all the Marmite adverts will have to be re-written.

I cannot see it tripping off the tongue. "Love it, hate it or really don't care much one way or the other."
