Robots develop language to 'talk' to each other
« Posted: 24 May 2011 at 09:20 PM »
Robots are developing their own language to help them navigate and improve their intellectual ability.
The Lingodroid research project lets robots generate random sounds for the places they visit in both simulations and a real office. The "words" are shared and the robots play games to establish which sound represents which location. The lexicon has proved so sophisticated that it can be used to help robots find places other robots direct them to.

Am I the only one to get tingling down my spine about this? Could this possibly be the first step towards artificial intelligence, and afterwards the taking over of the planet by the machines?! Or maybe I've been watching too many movies!

Not the first step by a long way, just another small step on the road to "Artificial Intelligence".
The definition of intelligence has been changing contstantly as machines show signs that previously were thought to be signs of intelligence. e.g. their ability to regularly beat chess masters etc.

That's a rather dismissive comment!
Some people may not be interested, but that doesn't mean that this means that 'no-one' is interested. We have hundreds of members on here that do not post but simply read threads - they may be interested. I feel quite offended by your remark.

The comment was simply a personal view - nothing more, nothing less.

A.I. Will just make future generations lazy. The world will become too dependant on machines that can think and do things for them. It is a disturbing thought!

That could easily be a quote from 20 years ago couldn't it? And it has already come true I think. Where would we be if all the computers went down today?

True, Very True.
I can remember as a kid watching Star Trek, where they were talking to each other via "video screens" or had hand held "communicators" and thinking how cool and futuristic..here we are, 2011..and were doing it! lol.
Mind you, I'm so glad one thing never came true from all the old Sci-Fi shows.... That everyone in the future would be walking round wearing Spandex jump suits!!! lol.
