Trade signboards « Posted: 24 May 2011 at 08:41 PM »

We are all aware(or should be) that bill posting is illegal and also unsightly. Trade signboards are tolerated for as long as the firm is working on the property where the board is displayed.
There is however, a new phenomenon appearing on our streets. Semi permanent plastic signs are being screwed to walls and fences all over town. The main perpetrators of this "crime"appear to be aerial erectors, although I have seen builders, electricians, drive layers and plumbers advertising in this way. I am aware that in these constrained times  it is costly to advertise through normal channels, but I do think this is a step too far.
What do you legal eagles think?

We sometimes use advertising boards (but would never just stick them anywhere), you normally give the customer a 10 - 20% discount depending on their location.

I've also noticed the "fly" boards going up all over town, there are quite strict laws relating to the display of any advertising boards. The council can charge the company for illegal displaying, I also think it looks a like desperation when you go putting them everywhere.

I'll see if I can find the legal guidelines... It's available freely online.

You used to need planning permission for some sign boards.

Agree with keiths on this one.My friend had a drive done and an aerial fitted and they were told a price. Then later they were told they would get a 20% discount if they allowed them to put a board on their wall to advertise the work they had done.It was on the understanding they keep it there for a year so obviously they took that option and made a saving its all legal apparently.

Four or five months ago a large metal sign appeared on the building next to me,jutting out to be visible to anyone on the road or path outside saying "Let by Olivers" with their phone number and web site details
This is on Waveney Road a 'conservation' area where in theorey any such signs are banned. No planning permission has ever been applied for.
If there are rules they should apply to everyone.

The sign is still there projecting out from the building.
It makes a total mockery of the so called conservation area status of this road which only seems to apply to certain peoples buildings.
I think that like far too much of what goes on in Lowestoft its not so much what you know as who.
I wonder how long any such sign I put up would last.

I have now asked and was told I can have an advertising sign on my shop as long as it's small and behind the glass, because and I quote" This is a conservation area". Odd when you look down this road or Suffolk road at all the other signs.
Tunnel vision at the planning office.
