Strange phone call
« Posted: 12 May 2011 at 07:43 PM »
The phone rang about 6:30pm - and grabbed the phone without looking at the display screen. From the initial sound I heard I guessed it was a call centre - probably outside the UK. Then the foreign voice spoke - possibly Indian. The caller asked if he was speaking to - and gave my name and address
“Is this correct?”he asked. I said that it could be - or it may not be. I demanded to know why he was calling me - he responded “It’s concerning an accident reported from your address.” I told him that no accident had been reported, he added “It could have been within the last two years.” I told him that this was not so - and that I was terminating the call.
I checked for the caller’s phone number - it only registered: 037. I did a search - and that comes up as a code from Sri Lanka - Kurunegala.
So just be aware of this - in case you get a call regarding an accident supposedly reported from your address.

Sounds like a cold call version of the text messages that are doing the rounds. 'Our records show you maybe eligible to (a few thousand pounds, usually) compensation for a recent accident that you had'.
The increase in the numbers of these calls and texts is rather worrying. Perhaps the spam filters on email are getting too good so they're having to resort to other means?

I guessed it was a “con” call of some sort. But I have to confess that I like to play them along - he did ask for confirmation of my house number - “Is the house number 13 on your front door?” he asked - I said that it wasn’t. I think this confused him - “What is the number on your front door?” he asked. I replied “There is no number on my door. It’s on a plaque fixed to the wall.”
