Old pictures of Carlton Colville?
« Posted: 28 April 2011 at 02:55 PM »
I'm currently rennovating/extending a house on Hall Road in Carlton Colville, and am hoping to find 'a little' about it.
It's nothing particularly interesting, but an old chap stopped me working recently and told me, he was sure, the row of cottages used to be called 'Tods Row' not 'Toads Row'
They're on the road opposite the field that's next to the Community Centre. I would love it if anyone had any pictures of the area, or any information at all about the cottages, presumably they were farm cottages or some kind, but we'd quite like to put a house name on once done, and the history of the place would have some impact on that if we had any!
Cheers
Clint

It would be worth calling in to the Record Office in the Library for local information. The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable.

I could give it a go I suppose?
I wish I had more time though! I cycle to work, so don't have time to get there during my lunch hour, and weekends/evenings I'm at gymnastics, swimming, football, ballet etc with the kids.
I'd literally have to take a day off to do it, and doubt my wife would be pleased about it.
I'll call them see if they can help.

In 1871 the land around The Hall was being farmed by a John Todd. He is listed in 1881 census as being retired.

I have a book about the history of Carlton Colville that was published at the Millenium. I will 'dig it out' when I have a moment and see if there is anything of interest in it for you, Clint.
