Britain heading for warmest Easter weekend on record « Posted: 20 April 2011 at 02:09 PM »

The Met Office said temperatures are likely to reach 25C (77F) in the South East during the Easter weekend, the hottest in more than 20 years.

The last time Easter Saturday and Sunday was this hot was in 1984 when the mercury reached 23.7C (74.7F).  John Hammond, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said the late Easter meant it was warmer.  He also said warm winds from the south east are warming Britain so the country is hotter than many parts of the continent, where there are cooler winds from the north west.

He said Costa Brava is currently only seeing temperatures of 18C (64.4F), while in Crete it is just 16C (60.8F). “It is going to a be very warm and sunny weekend with 23/24C (73.4/75.2F) across the south East, it could even reach 25C (77F), so it could well be record breaking,” he said.

The whole of the UK will enjoy warm weather over the Easter Weekend, with temperatures in the low twenties as far north as Glasgow. Beaches will be packed as people head for some sunshine on the coast. The only cool areas will be the north east and eastern coast of Scotland where there will also be mist.

There may also be a few isolated showers across the country caused by the heat creating clouds.  Indications are that the fine, dry weather will carry on into next week, though it will be a little cooler for the royal wedding.  Mr Hammond said the whole month of April might be the warmest on record.

So far April has been warmer than the typical mean temperature for the month, which is just 6.9C (44.4F).  However farmers and gardeners are increasingly concerned about the lack of rain.  March was the driest month in 50 years in England and Wales and many reservoirs and rivers are exceptionally low for this time of year, prompting fears of a hosepipe ban. Looks as though I’ll have to get some “Factor 50”!

Nah - I’m sewn into them for the year!  Look a bit like yesterday’s pictures of Nigella Lawson in her burkini - only in white.  Shocked  Link

Meg: It could be on 21 October (that’s a Friday) - that’s an alternative date just in case it doesn’t actually end on 21 May!  I suppose it depends on which one you believe - if any! Grin

I hope there is not another hose pipe ban, we've only just got rid of the last one up here in the NW. We can get Lowestoft's annual rainfall in a month up here near the lakes but we have to send it all down to you southern softies  Wink

It's like the Dust Bowl all over again here in Oklahoma.Today I noticed two churches that had "Pary for Rain" on their boards outside. We may get some rain on Sunday or Monday. There has been rain in the state but all to the east of us.The ranch got quite a lot down near Henryetta.
