I've learnt to take everything life throws at me!!

Mark your calendars for an impressive and upcoming flyby of an asteroid that’s one of the larger potentially perilous space rocks in the heavens – in terms of smacking the Earth in the future.
It’s the case of asteroid 2005 YU55, a round mini-world that is about 1,300 feet in diameter. In early November, this asteroid will approach Earth within a scant 0.85 lunar distances. Due the object’s size and whisking by so close to Earth, an extensive campaign of radar, visual and infrared observations are being planned.
Asteroid 2005 YU55 was discovered by Spacewatch at the University of Arizona, Tucson’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory on Dec. 28, 2005. En route and headed our way, the cosmic wanderer is another reminder about life here on our sitting duck of a planet.

I make that to be within about 200,000 miles of earth!

In ' Space Terminology' that is v.v.v.v.v. very close!
Let's hope it doesn't take a swerve as Earth's gravity pulls it around....

As it nears the earths atmosphere there will be changes to tides winds etc so we would see, feel some of the effects then

The asteroid is far too small to have any effect on the earth, just ashame its not a bit closer so we can get a decent view when it passes!

with a diameter of 1300 feet it would be like gouging out Ben Nevis and trowing it though space, if it did hit, at that size it would cause us a few problems!

And it'll be travelling at an incredible speed, since Force = mass x speed (I think) it'll be an incredibly powerful impact if it were to hit, vapourize part of an ocean or something..

Energy is related to mass and velocity2 ( I believe ) so that makes it worse.

Ben Nevis is 1344 metres high, James, this is 1300 feet - only about one third the height.
You also have to remember that a fair amount of it would likely burn up on entering the earth's atmosphere.

What we really have to be worried about is the sun.A massive solar storm is expected within 2 years and its already had major but smaller storms causing blackouts across america and satellite comms to be broken.Already the northern lights have been seen as far south as the south coast of the UK and nasa and sun experts are studying the solar activiity big time so we can be prepared. If it happend on a big scale which it could there could be a Global hurricane and severe weather across the globe which is why the weather has been going weird lately all over the place.Back on topic have you seen the crater in arizona it was caused by a meteor the size of a small stone and look what damage that done. But it did not burn up in the atmosphere.

If we cross it's path or vice versa it may come in at 90 degrees vertical and not have time to burn up in the atmosphere, most do come in at an angle since the orbit paths cross at an angle less than right angles. I hope that makes sense. The sun activity can cause all sorts of problems, it can distort the earths magnetic field, causing ions to fly in and cause havoc with electrical things.. Hardhats On! And unplug the TV aerial!...zaappp.... best go out and get some spare fuses...

Off-topic. How is your dad doing following his operation. Is he home yet?
Thanks BB, he's been steadily recuperating at the JPH for a couple of weeks now, having a bit of trouble walking but building his strength back up.
I do agree solar storms are a threat to the current human lifestyle that relies so much on satalites, transmitters electricity etc... but this could be repaired in time unlike the aftermath of a 'big' asteroid hit

Glad to know he's now nearer home and on the mend, James. Hope he continues to improve and is able to return home, soon. My best wishes to him.
