More than 20 Suffolk firefighters sent to cat on roof
« Posted: 06 April 2011 at 05:02 AM »
A fire service has admitted it over-reacted when it sent five vehicles and more than 20 firefighters to rescue a cat from a roof.
Crews from Leiston, Bungay, Felixstowe and Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk were dispatched to deal with the incident in Roberts Road, Leiston, on Monday. The cat was rescued by the Leiston crew and the other crews were stood down.
Members of the public used Facebook to accuse Suffolk Fire and Rescue of over-reacting to the incident. The service uses the social networking site to alert people to its activities One user, Michael Ford, described it as "over the top" while another posted: "Meanwhile when four fire engines are called to a cat there's somebody human in danger!"
The fire service said it had amended its policy for future incidents.
Teresa Saunders, from Leiston, heard the cat calling from a neighbour's roof and raised the alarm after an unsuccessful attempt to lure it down herself.
Four fire engines and a turntable ladder were sent out. Karl Rolfe, area manager at the fire service, said it automatically deployed several engines and firefighters for incidents where a ladder might be needed to go higher than the first floor. He said the fire service had now amended its policy

The only couple of reasons why it should cost more when five fire engines & crews were sent out to rescued a cat on a roof is if they were called in and were on over time, also for the extra fuel used.
Why shouldn't they rescue a cat they are not often doing much else.
I am afraid they are in line for massive reorganisation.

Let's hope that the comment by the fire service's area manager - Karl Rolfe is firmly in place. He said the fire service had now amended its policy. Especially where cats are concerned are concerned!

It makes no difference Trigger if they don't rescue cats they will only be back at their depot playing cards or something.

The sad thing is that now people have made a fuss, policy will prevent them rescuing animals - and they will cite public insistence that this is not what they should be wasting money on, when people moan.

Aussie you old fraud you had the cheek to call me harsh I used to be married to a retained fireman and he'd often be jumping out of bed 'in the middle of the night to go to a bad fire got a recommendation for saving someone s life and often put his own life in danger

At least Iv'e got this debate moving fc. I am serious, our fire service is well trained by competent men & they put there lives on the line when called upon to do so, thats if health & safety doesn't stop them which has been the case of late. The amount of times when when the fire service goes out on a serious fire where life I limb are in grave danger is not often although I will agree that every fire is potentially serious and I would not expect us to be without adequate fire protection cover.
Having said that I believe we are grossly over staffed with full time firemen and I also believe we should reduce this and add some of them to the reserve, then reduce the reserve to an acceptable level. I would not know the levels to what it ought to be reduced to I can only believe a twenty percent reduction would show us no reduction of cover or safty.
