Who is green? « Posted: 29 March 2011 at 11:23 AM »

In the queue at the supermarket, the cashier told the older woman that plastic
bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized to her and
explained:-

"We didn't have the green thing back in my day."

That's right, they didn't have the green thing in her day. Back then,
they returned their milk bottles, Coke bottles and beer bottles to the
shops. The shops sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized
and refilled, using the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

But they didn't have the green thing back in her day.

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn't have a lift
in every store and office building. They walked to the grocers shops and
didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go 400 yards.

But she's right. They didn't have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby's nappies because they didn't have the
throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling
machine burning up 220 volts "wind and solar power" really did dry the
clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters,
not always brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right, they didn't have the green thing back in her day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house not a TV in every
room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a pizza dish, not a screen the size of Begium.
In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn't have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used wadded up newspaper to cushion it, not styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

But she's right, they didn't have the green thing back then

Back then, they didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut
the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised
by working so they didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she's right, they didn't have the green thing back then

They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty, instead of using a
cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They
refilled pens with ink, instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced
the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor
just because the blade got dull.

But they didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the public bus and kids rode their bikes to school,  instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service.
They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn't need a computerised gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But that old lady is right. They didn't have the green thing back in her
day.

OMG...that was MY day too!

True, ladies stayed at home because the washing took them all day, heating up the iron on fir that needed somebody to be up early to bring in the coal and light. The possibility of a warm house was just a dream, and there was no need to labour save, because energy saving wasn't an issue. There was a surplus of energy because coal was cheap, and nobody cared about the environment at all. Coal pollution was everywhere, smog a fact of life. They didn't need electrical gadgets because until somebody invented them, nobody knew any better. TV went off with the National Anthem, and everybody went around the house switching of the few electrical appliances they had. Everybody used the oven to warm up things we now do in the microwave in seconds. TVs and radios were full of valves and consumed far more electricity than our modern ones do. We heated the water with an immersion heater, the idea of radiators in every room just a dream! Every single bit of rubbish was buried in the ground, and we did really bad things with quite unpleasant substances. Motor mechanics poured old engine oil down the drains, we thought nothing of letting kids play with mercury at school, one of the most toxic substances we have.

We didn't need to be green, because we didn't care a tosh for the environment - due to ignorance. Now we know how nasty some of our waste is, and we're trying to fix it. It's a bit late, but we are trying. The only annoyance is that people seem to want to become luddites, and I really cannot see that anyone really wants to go back to a non-electrical, cold, wet and probably smelly existence. In those good old days, we didn't need antiperspirant, we were used to smelling. Our clothes were washed once a week if they needed it or not. We washed our shirts when they were dirty, not when they'd just been worn.

I'd rather have it like it is now - thanks very much. We're still wasteful, but at least we are aware!

Sometimes....... One case in point that almost made me fume was when I bought a coconut in a supermarket and found it was wrapped in cling film.

Excess packaging is what "gets my goat"

"When will they ever learn?"

Line from Pete Seeger's "Where have all the flowers gone?"

My goodness Paul 'we didnt need to be green because we didnt care a tosh for the environment' what are you on. There was precious little going on then to harm the environment food wasnt driven half way round the world, there werent dozens of high polluting planes taking off every minute, there werent computors blaring on all night from every office.

There is a happy medium with everything and of course none of want to go back to treading the soiled clothes in the river but a bit of awareness from our lifestyles now and a few changes would make a lot of difference

Like it Nikkai.

But there is a touch of rose tinted glasses about it. No mention of damp washing around the house, homes so cold people freezing to death. Air pollution so bad that thousand died in a few days.

On the plus side people were fitter as they walked and cycled a lot more, and the local economy was in a better shap as people tended to work and shop close to home.

But can you imagine asking people to give up their cheap flights, 4x4's and year round supply of exotic fruit? try it and see the response you get! LOL!!

Well.  Grin
Yes there are much better products in use now and yes there was a need to light a fire in the morning to heat the house and the back boiler where the water was heated, A job I did as a child of 10 as did my brothers at that age.
We were awakened in the morning, each did their own bit of "fatigues" as dad would politely put it then mum was allowed to get up once the hearth was raked and cleaned and a fresh fire roaring.
Food was of the season and from the garden (front garden for flowers back for food) the walk to the infant school with younger siblings then off to the secondary school for the elder ones and then to the grammar for the oldest. Each of us wearing the clothes of "hand me down"
I have watched the old cine films of the family and though there was not much in the realm of luxury there is and always was very big smiles on the faces of all the family, sadly I look at my son's and brothers families and see slightly over weight and "sad" existence in their lives

My post is of a light hearted posting
