I think we need:
An easier to open inner bag in packs of cereal. I always seem to end up with an unsatisfactory job.
TV, video etc. remote controls that bounce back on to the arm of the chair they've just fallen from. Or, better still, thought controlled TV's etc.
Toast (after adding the marmalade) that is weighted so that it always lands sunny side up
Any other inventive thoughts?

I'd add remote controls where the buttons light up like mobile phones - for easier use in dark rooms.

1. I'm not allowed to use scissors!
2. If you're in a "dark room" could the problem be reduced by switching on the light?

In that case you need a button on the TV remote that switches on your light

Mel - of course, if you had candles - i.e. 4 candles! - your remote wouldn't have a button for them.

I think you'll find that the slowness is due to the type of TV - LCD/LED. Obviously the problem with the 5 button sounds like a minor problem with that actual button - next time your press 5 - wait a bit longer and, you never know, you must just gett "5" .
Remember the old saying "Patience is a virtue"
My "new" telly is a Sony - when I switch on, I wait a few seconds - and up comes the TV brand in largish white letters. I know it's that brand - cos there's a label on the front that says that!

Depending on the TV, Funky, it might change channels quicker if you try pressing 05 (Zero-Five). Because there are more than 9 channel numbers there is usually about a five second delay for it to recognise a single digit input in case you want a channel above number 9 when you would input two digits. As I said it might, only might, recognise the zero as the first digit. You can but try it and see if it works.
Regarding the lights, I do have a remote control for the light I have on in my lounge in the evenings.

One good pedal or wind up generator, one with multi adapters to charge up our multitude of gadgets that take batteries to run the instead of all the the various charges around the house. for instant mobiles, Electric razors, drilling machines, car batteries, Torches . many that get mislaid and not available just when you need them.

We (SWMBO and myself) to make sure you know it is not the royal we.. though SWMBO may have a differing look on that. I digress. We have a remote which is an 'anynet' devise so it can control the TV the DVD the Theater system and three other programmable devises Sadly I am not allowed to 'play' with it and the wife has all the remotes close to herself for HER personal use.

It's about the size of your thumb & has adapters for all different types of phones.

My guess is that you will need a degree to set it up. I am probably stupid but I have tried a couple of universal remotes and I have ended up discarding them because I cannot get them to do what I want.

Funky: the modern flat screen TVs work in a different way to the old CRT TVs - they probably only 3 or 4 channels - and each one was on a different button. New technology means that we have many channels via the built-in tuner - you choose your channel, press the button - that’s got to be “sent” to the TV, which then has to be sent to the tuner for your chosen channel to appear on screen.
“ . . and I'm not usually an impatient person” - is that “in your opinion”?

1. I'm not allowed to use scissors! Before I say what a silly excuse, & nobody can stop you using scissors, I'm going to ask you why not, & who prevents you?
I'm reminded of a story circulating on the internet. During the space race the Americans spent hundreds of thousands of dollars developing, testing & building a pen that worked in zero gravity. And the Russians - they just used a pencil.

different buttons like on and off and the freeserve buttons are considerable easier than god knows how many remotes with countless buttons on and not clue what they mean.time you worked it all out then bu88er tv up doing it,it so much more simple to press one button per channel.that is all tv needs.but no we got remotes that do everything.time spent scrolling tv channels that i never get to see anything.

That is a nice story and has been going around for years. Only one problem........it is not true.
Initially both the USA and the Soviets used pencils in their spacecraft until Paul Fisher realised they needed something better and developed the "space pen" completely independant of NASA. Since then both the USA and the Soviets have used the Space Pen.
Full story is here. http://www.snopes.com/business/genius/spacepen.asp

On my travels I see, on many occasions, car drivers who seem to be unaware that their indicators are on and should have been cancelled. This can be very dangerous in some circumstances. There is in all vehicles visual flashing indicators on the dash board to alert them to this, which they do not seem to notice. When the indicators are on the clicking of a relay within the circuit can normally also be heard. There are many factors that cause this 'clicking relay' to be unnoticed e.g. radio on/ music playing etc., ( or maybe the driver is deaf!!). I think that vehicle manufacturers should fit, as standard, a device that sends out loud 'bleeps' that let the driver know when the indicators are on. I have constructed such devices and fitted them to some of my cars, over the years, particularly those that were very quiet in operation. This was after I had a 'near miss' at a road junction a number of years ago. The circuits I use are basically small audio oscillators with a piezo sounder (small loudspeaker) output. These can be connected to the indicator wiring. Other circuits can be constructed to 'sense' when a rear light/stop light bulb has failed, this is indicated by small LEDs mounted on the dash board. The LED circuitry can be arranged so that they illuminate and alert the driver when a bulb failure occurs.

Hows this one for safety, if your vehicle travels faster the 10% above the speed limit for more than say ten seconds a coloured Light automatically flashes on the top of the vehicle out side and is indicated inside to warn the driver.

Datsun had lamp fail lights as does some Honda models. The indicator problem is sort of looked at in the Vauxhall range where they will shut off after a time if left on. I maybe a little observant while driving but still look at the instruments that tell you all the info you should be keeping an eye on whilst in the operation of a vehicle. There are audible warnings for exceeding speed limits and also for other reasons (too close etc) but are additional to the price of a vehicle?

Or why not connect the engine electronics to the sat nav and prevent the driver from speeding at all? This will never work, as we all know, drivers have the right to drive as fast as they want!

The Acle Straight in the morning when I travel to work would be lit up like Blackpool illuminations with the number of people who speed along there at 6-am.

Why is it so stupid? After all the max legal speed for a HGV is 40mph on single carriageways, 50mph on duel carriageways and 60mph on motorways.

Try driving a truck !
sorry do not want to sound wrong but a 32 tonne truck trying to pass another which is a 44 tonne but finding that the limiter lets you get level then that's it you HAVE the power but the limiter will hold you back!
Ever wondered why the line of traffic is SO long behind two trucks which then take longer to pass?
I know there will be the " well stay behind then reply" Now think on this a 44 tonne truck with 6 axles and possibly 22 tyres on the road is limited where a coach with only 6 tyres is not and the coach is capable of carrying 20 to 50 PERSONS, they have the same brake systems on each axle, the trucks load is secured the coach is NOT.

Easy, re-place the railways that Dr Beeching took away. This is being done in some parts of the country already, particularly where towns have got queues of thro traffic..

True, it is unlikely to happen straightaway, more of a gradual thing into the future plans.. trams and light railways are becoming very popular in many UK towns with more in the pipeline... ( the ones in the pipeline are called 'tubes' maybe? )
