Trouble in town near McDonalds « Posted: 25 March 2011 at 07:39 PM »

Apparently there is a police presence near McDonalds and a large area taped off.

I wonder what that is about ?

Current town centre incident « Reply #1 Posted: 25 March 2011 at 07:40 PM »

I've been on Facebook this evening and a number of my friends from Lowestoft have been updating their statuses regarding a man threatening to jump off the roof of Macdonalds with a rope around his neck, does anyone know whats happening? Apparently police have now closed off the road there. Nothing on EDP website as it's still early on.

There must be easier ways of attention seeking.

No news either way just glancing at what people are writing on Facebook, seems this thread has been showing well on Google judging by the number of guests online tonight.

If you have reached the stage that he obviously has then you are unable to think logically at all.

Been there and not got quite as bad as he has.

The help is there but you definately need someone with compassion and understanding to point you in the right direction.

If you don't have that then you have nothing.

Still on-going as of 10 minutes ago when I went to pick up my wife from a party.

From the state she is in I guess she had a good time.

I agree Morty, I am glad you found help when you needed  it.  In fairness the police will have a trained counsellor and a lot of help will be offered when he (or she) is down. Lets hope the community around this person give them time to heal and not be too judgemental  of their actions which is NOT attention seeking but obviously a cry for help from a desperate person

He climbed the roof and then phoned the Police himself to tell them. Doesn't sound like a cry for help to me. Sounds like he knew exactly what he was doing.

It's on the journal website. Just because you haven't heard yet, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Whatever his state of mind, he wasted 11 hours of the Polices time last night.

It's not hearsay - it's actually now accepted reporting. The BBC continually broadcast news they pick up on facebook and twitter - they usually try to verify it - but once they have two reports on the same topic, they consider it verified and report it.

The trouble is that it IS news. The cost of policing it is unimportant. If people are ill in any way, then events are not really in their control, are they?

It's rather ironic that budget exists for these unplanned issues, but doesn't for events like the carnival - or how about the huge TUC rally in London today. Do you think if they said they couldn't afford it, the TUV would cancel the protest?

Ok Justsu,  I did look on the journal website at 9.30 this morning and there was no report so obviously it was reported soon after I looked, but I still stick to what I said previously I don't think you can make a judgement on a man or womans mental health by whether they called the police or not.

“UPDATE: Eyewitness speaks of crowds encouraging man to jump off a roof in Lowestoft”

An eyewitness has revealed how a crowd tried to encourage a man to jump off a roof in Lowestoft as police tried to talk him down.

Groups of people gathered on Friday night as police spent nearly 11 hours talking down a man who was threatening to jump off the roof of McDonalds, in London Road North. The man, who was in his late 30s, had called the police at around 5pm saying that he was on the roof.
But as trained police negotiators tried to talk him down, some in the crowd were shouting for him to jump. Eyewitness Ian Armitage, of Norwich, was in the town for a family event and was shocked at what he saw as he walked to the train station just before 11pm.

Mr Armitage, 28, said: “There were around 30 people watching on, huddled around the station building. I don’t know if they had been out drinking or messing about but some were laughing and pointing. When we got to the station we could hear people shouting ‘jump off’ and ‘stop wasting our time, we’ve been here for ages, do us a favour’. I could not believe they were telling him to jump off.  It is sad really. Whoever it was - was obviously in a bad way, so for people to stand around laughing isn’t very nice.”

It is pretty sad how some people treat the mentally ill. Chanting for him to jump, wanting to bring back the workhouse, and accusing them of wasting police time is pretty poor. Mental illness can touch anyone of us at any time.

I think some views on here are disgusting, i really hope these people do not experience mental illness, your body does funny things. I think the negative views on here reflect the unsympathetic nature of people today. Mental illness effects many people and the answer is not to make them feel like they are alone. Perhaps people are driven to such extremes because people and society will not except them for who they are, deep down someone with mental illness is not different from you or i.

UPDATE: Kessingland man sentenced after threatening to jump off a roof in Lowestoft

By RICHARD WOOD Monday, March 28, 2011
4:04 PM

A KESSINGLAND man has been fined a total of £215 after he sparked an 11-hour police stand-off and threatened to jump off a Lowestoft roof.

Paul Duell, 38, of High Street, Kessingland was charged with possessing a knife in a public place - two stanley knives - and possession of a class B drug - amphetamine - after the dramatic events of Friday night and Saturday morning.

Appearing at Lowestoft Magistrates Court this morning (Monday), Mr Duell was fined £215 in total for the two offences.

As previously reported, an eyewitness revealed how a crowd tried to encourage the man to jump off the roof of McDonalds, in London Road North, as police tried to talk him down.

Looks like this may have just been a case of too much illegal substances and alcohol, rather than mental illness!!!! But who are we to judge!! Whats worries me more is how many people are out there carrying knives etc in public places!

You cannot base that on one person Happy chick, there are hundreds of millions of people on this Earth, and i do not know how many of the world are suffering from mental illness. Mental illness can stem from Depression to schizophrenia, who are we to say that people with these illnesses are automatically ill because of drink and drugs?? Yes there is a high proportion of people carrying knifes, but thats a whole different argument

I didn't for a minute assume he was mentally ill because of the drink and drugs, but had he been suffering from any of the awful ilnessess you mention then surely the court/police have some kind of responsibilty to offer help rather than fine him and send him on his way!! The mere fact that the article mentions the possession of drugs must mean something?
