I hear them in Kirkley I like hearing that warm little buzz I do come over sometimes in the summer used to go a lot when I was a kid with Mum and Dad and remember a very popular big boat called Whizzobang               ( amazing the irrelevant things you retain) that used to drive in close to the edge and wet all us kids on the front row much to our delight

last year the barriers got in the way a lot when i was fishing The whole strtch of concrete on the south bank between the clubhouse and the boulevard entrance was blocked off for the whole season

I love the smell and noise and the spectacle of the hydroplanes races but is there any need to put these ugly barriers up and leave them there all year Why cant theu take them down at the end of every meeting

Its a waterside park first and onlt a racing venue second

My guess is 90 percent of the pople who ever visit the park are there to enjoy the park and the broad for waht it is and not as powerboat spectatros so surely th facility should be left as they fonud it for normsal enjoyment

swingbridge you may not know that the L O B M C has been in existance for over 100 years and i believe it is the oldest club of its kind in the country. We should be proud of this and support them and not complain about the barriers on the banks etc. .I dont find them ugly i dont know but it might well be the rules of health and safety for powerboat spectators and fishermen alike.A lot of youngsters spend the school holidays fishing along that stretch so if its to keep them safe im all for the barriers. Some people who have moved to this area complain about the noise of the racing what right have they got to do this. This is our heritage. My husband is a life long member {over 60yrs}in his younger days he was a machanic for some of the well known boats and drivers. The racing is his passion along with all the other stand fast supporters and it brings in a bit of money to the economy and it is only for the summer months. The park is there to be shared by everyone.

I know it has been around for a long time I used to wathc them when i was a teenager in the seventie s when they used to remove the barriers betweeen race days I am pleased they are still there but i am also annoyed they have got lazy and leave the barriers in place for the whole season They get in the way of other legtiimate park users I agree completly about people who complain about the noise they should go somwhere else Nicholas Everitt left the park to the town for recreation and enjoyment of everyone and i think he would be unhappy about the tatty barriers the motor boat club use If we need saefty barriers then lets put some permanent ones up that look like they belong in the park instaed of those crappy galvenised ones that look awful when they have been shoved about by fishermen Yes the park is there to be shaerd by all but motor boat racing for three hours every week for 14 weeks does not justufy barriers 24 hours a day seven days a week for 14 weeks

I came down to Lowstuff and watched the racing one day last summer. I really enjoyed seeing it again as I used to go almost every week as a lad. the boats have got a lot faster since then but it has never been the same since the F1's were banned. It used to be great to see Tom Percival and Bob Spalding still winning a handicap race even though they didn't even come out of the pits until lap 6 of a 9 lap race. I guess at over 130mph it was a bit dangerous though. What was the lap record back then, about 25 seconds? Has anyone ever beaten it I think it was Bob who created the lap record?

i dont think L O B M C would have the money to replace old barriers for new they struggle to find decent prize money for the events.I dont know but you might find Waveny District Council may have installed the barriers so please dont blame L O B M C with out checking and if it was the council have a moan at them.

I though it was resposibility of the motorboat club to take them down after every race meeting which i see they are already ignorijng

Re: Powerboating « Reply #22 Posted: 16 April 2011 at 03:24 PM »

I believe that it is actually the council that provide the barriers, the barriers remain in place all year1 reason is health and safety 2 is due to the high tides that the broad gets these days.

I for one would prefer barriers there all year around, being a bit unsitely than hearing about someone losing a life  after falling into the water, after all there are weeds and things below the water than can prevent somebody getting out safely

over the years unfortunately the barriers have been moved further back from the waters edge, which to the fishermen is a hindrance.

Swingbridge, support the club rather than have a go,the club are always looking for volunteers to clear up after racing, become a member and voice your opinions to the commitee

They are not there in the winter so that knokcs the health and saftey argument ont he head   and anyway the tides are no higher now than 30 years ago

The boat club comittee do not have any say on what happens int he park They are just tenants on race days

The park is run by a committee of the friends of nichloas everitt park It is a recreation facility for evberyone Id like to know what they think about the barriers Is anybody out there a committee member or know one to ask

Re: Powerboating « Reply #24 Posted: 17 April 2011 at 12:31 PM »

what we need to know are
1 who is responsible for the barriers.
2 If it is the boat club, why are they not removed.
3 Is the fact that the barrier stay up in the summer months due to the racing.
4 If it is due to the racing, why are they not removed between races.

If someone has the answers,it would be nice to know.

hi just let you know,FONEP have no say on the barriers it  is the council who put them out  and just leave them out till someone remembers them (about sept!)
they are not a health and safety thing (no one fulls in the water in winter?Huh)
I think they should be removed after every meeting but that will never happen

Very nicely summarized pm1967

Why doyou say it will never happen brrgus Someone must have the power to say what oght to happen It does not seem right that the boat club have hijacked the park for the best months of the yyear as their own private facility The look of the park is completely spoiled by these ugly rusty barriers for the prime part of the summer seaseon If you sit on the benches all you can see is rust galvanised steel in the way of an othersiwe picturesque view

Does the fonep think they should be removed brrgus

Sorry swingebridge I was in the park today and far from totally spoiling the park I didnt even notice if they were there or not
I am pleased to see they have fenced off the boating lake I was always fearful a little one would run in unnoticed

Whilst talking of Nicolas Everitt park it was lovely to see the thatch on one of the buildings being renewed and even lovier to see that it was two young men obviously trained in a very old craft doing it

No need to apologise I dont expect everyyone to agree with me I do expect that many would though pm1967 sumarized what is requried and brrgus has provided part of the answer So far it appears nobody really knows who or why these barriers are there and this suggests its just another creeeping erosion of our rights and way of life with no real jusitification

The health and saftey point is wrong becasue theer is a crash barier to mark the edge and when you compare the risk to the same risk at the boat moorings near the tahched buildings on the boulevard there is nothing there at all and a bigger drop to the water and no way youd ever be able to fence it

All thsi is diferent again to the boatjng lake because this ia very close to a childrens play area and therefors you expect to be able to encourge children run a little bit wild there so it needs to be fenced

Re: Powerboating « Reply #30 Posted: 22 April 2011 at 09:01 AM »

swingbridge Here is another lead for you to look into .The Broads Authority has a big say in what happens on the broads e.g.They check all the time if it is safe for racing to take place e.g.if the water is lapping over the first section of the concrete due to spring tides combined  with high winds, the Broads Authority wil prevent the racing going ahead. They have a big say on safety. The barriers are secured with stainless steel  safety bands so they cant be interfered with, moved or chucked into the broads by yobs.To take them down after every race would probobly take two men a full day to remove the bands and the barriers and then the expense off putting new steel bands on when they go up again This is probobly why they are left in place for the season .Unfortunately for some it is the way of life today

Nice theory but during the season alst year the barrier s got pushed abut and the steel bands conetcting them together got broken and nobody did anythinf to repair or replace them Probably fishermen like me annoyed by them getting int he way Result is an ebven bigger mess

Fair enough if they need to be there for safety then put them up for the race but take them down afetrweards so we can all enjoy the park as mr everit intended between races if it take a lot of effort than get volunteers to do it Fonep are asking for volunteers perhaps this is something for them to do
