"Tsunami hits north-eastern Japan after massive quake" BBC report:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12709598
A massive earthquake has hit the north-east of Japan, triggering a tsunami that has caused extensive damage.
Japanese television showed cars, ships and even buildings being swept away by a vast wall of water after the 8.9 magnitude earthquake.
Officials said the wave could be 10m (33ft), and numerous casualties are feared. The quake struck about 250 miles (400km) from Tokyo at a depth of 20 miles, shaking the capital. The tremor at 1446 local time (0546 GMT) was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks.

Looks awful, and it seems tidal waves are going to hit other areas in the pacific yet to come. Very Distressful scenes on the news.

The Tsunami will hit the Phillipines in about four hours after that the west coast of America which has been put on alert.
My friends son who lives in Tokyo is ok Everything in his flat is laying on its side. They are still getting after shocks. No power or water. He is outside and has his survival kit with him, they are all issued with one. His mum spoke to him on his mobile but he cannot recharge it for future use and his e mails are not coming through.

In two hours the tsunami is supposed to hit Hawaii and then the west coast of America. What a terrible tragedy in Japan. There was a minor earthquake a few miles from us this morning but of course nothing like the one that hit Japan.

It was horrendous to see it on the news this morning, especially the footage from the helicopter of the advancing wall of water over the flat farmland and roads with the odd car trying to flee, some only to have their way blocked by water ahead, it must have been sheer terror for them. 'In pictures' on the BBC website are very striking especially the one with the water coming trough some distant trees being a village.
