Pothole that nearly swallowed a truck
« Posted: 09 March 2011 at 06:35 AM »
Two brothers had a lucky escape when their truck plunged into this 4ft-deep, water-filled pothole
Chris Nedic was driving his Nissan pick-up along a country road when the surface suddenly collapsed. He and brother Carl jumped out seconds before the truck nosedived. Chris suffered minor cuts and bruises while Carl, 25, was treated in hospital for back and leg injuries.
Chris, 23, said: “We are both lucky to be alive.” The giant pothole was caused by two burst water pipes along the A464 near Albrighton, Shropshire, on Monday.
Carl said: “There was a sign warning of flooding but no attempt had been made to close the road and we were inching our way through the water at no more than 5mph when the truck suddenly pitched forward into the hole.
“Somebody has badly blundered and it could have ended in tragedy.”
Ambulance crews called had to retreat after they feared a second hole was opening up. An ambulance spokesman said: “Had it been a small car, the whole vehicle might have been submerged and that could have led to a very different situation.” Up to 2,000 homes in the area were left without water.

A little bit of "big up the story" I think IMHO
traveling at 5 MPH I see no reason for them to 'jump out' and I see the sun roof is open so maybe they climbed out that way.
the truck would have landed on the chassis once the front wheels had passed the edge of the road surface thus stopping the vehicle from traveling, even with the traction from the rear wheels this movement would have stopped, the influx of water to the engine would stop it and then the forward motion would cease totally unless further slip of the ground works which from this image you can see has not been apparent.
Sorry but I just see an insurance claim against the water company (the original reason for the land collapse) or (and) the highways agency or who maintains the road in that area.

And who was supposed to be able to notice that underneath an enormous puddle a hole had formed also full of water?
