Burning coaster beached at Pakefield
« Posted: 02 March 2011 at 08:05 PM »
As a young boy I remember my father taking me to Pakefield cliffs to see a burning coaster that had been beached there. Does anybody remember it? I would have been about 6 years old at a guess which means it would have been around 1959-ish?

What happened to it? Was it broken up or was it left to rot?

I think they managed to tow it off.
Does anyone remember when the Tobago went aground off the North extension? I went down to see that too. There was a big tug trying to pull it off and back into the water but I don't think it managed it?

I also remember the coaster on fire on Pakefield beach, We saw the smoke and went to see what was going on. we sat on the cliffs and had to shield our faces from the heat from the burning cargo, straw or hay I think. W.e went to visit some friends who near AK Diesels in the evening and it was still burning then. There was one thing I remember was that even though it was so close to the beach a inflatable liferaft was launched to get the crew off. Thankyou Funkychick for the photos, its nice to know that what I remember was accurate.
I also remember a fishing boat on its side on the north extension, if that was the Tobago then my father took some photos, I'll have to ask him for them. I got a bit confused researching the Tobago. It seems that there were 2 of them. The Tobago LT182 that ran aground was built in 1950 called Milford Countess M128 and scrapped in 1964 after being refloated. The second Tobago LT165 was built in 1960 called Saxon Venture GY616, renamed in 1964 I got confused because the pictures I found of Tobago are of the second one not the one that ran aground. I think there's a book by Malcom White on Colne Fishing, have to have a look.

I'm pleased somebody else can remember it SpiderBob. I went down on the beach there to watch. There was a bulldozer trying to pull it upright whilst the tug tried to pull it clear.
