Suffolk Regiment 4th Bttln-Based at the Drill Hall,St. Peter's St. Lowestoft
« Posted: 06 January 2011 at 05:14 PM »
If anyone is interested in the 1935-45 History of the 4th.Suffolks or had any relative who served in WW11 who was captured in Feb.1942. I have a great deal of information, as my Father was the RSM who kept a record of all"his Boys" who were killed in the Battle or who later died as P O W's. a copy of his books and photographs are now held in the Imperial War Museum.

Malcolm. You must be very young if you are unaware of the greatest disaster in British Military history. Feb 15th 1942- The fall of Singapore. The 4th and 5th Suffolks TA together with the 5th and 6th Norfolks plus Cambridgeshire and Lincolns.
arrived at Singapore 6 weeks before the capitulation of the British army who outnumbered the Japs by about 4 to 1 but led by a bunch of total incompetents. Gen Percival etc. surrendered to save the civil population, who were mainly murdered by the jap troops.
Some 16,000 Pow's died of brutality, starvation, and disease before the war ended

Funky Chick.
My reference to Malcolm's lack of knowledge was not a criticism but merely an observation! My Father would now be 116 yrs old. he fought through the whole of WW1 and was badly wounded in the Battle of the Somme July-Nov 1916, Two of his brothers were killed in this battle. One was in the Canadian Mounties before he volunteered and the 19yr old Roger ws a student of Theology at London University.
My father joined the Suffolks TA in 1930.
I have a photo of him being decorated by the Duchess of Kent when she laid the
foundation stone at the New Lowestoft hospital in May 1937. Most of the soldiers in this photo' were killed or died as PoW's. If anyone is interested I can send a copy of this photo, where they might recognise a relative.

I do have a great interest in the second would war and know of the fall of Singapore but know nothing of who fought there.
My main interest has been the European sector and Russia. Would be interested to know more about the far east. I believe they were known the the forgotten army at the time and that has followed on.
Not many people want to talk about it after being involved in a war.

Malcolm. Unfortunately nt many people who fought at Singapore are still alive to talk about their misfortunes.
i have a vast library of books on all aspects of WW11 and, of course I lived through it. There are many good books on Singapore and the subsequent imprisonment.
The fall of Singapore is one. Just look on Google. one of the best on Burma and the 14th army is "Quartered safe out Here" by George McDonald Fraser.
You will enjoy this.
