Is that the place that use to be a Spar shop? I've seen pictures of that when Fred Willis was the owner

The shop you describe was in my childhood days a general sweet shop which as a child after the war is where we would take ration books to buy our quota of sweets,I knew it as Nicholls the sweet shop although I believe they sold everything in those days. I remember it well as children we would go into the shop and ask dear old Mrs Nicholls if we could have a pennyworth of what she hadn't got which would result in her chasing us boys down Florence road.

I have not lived at Pakefield since 1961,however I can remember the shop selling old fire places at one time not to far back, sadly I do not posses  any photos only those of where we lived in Florence road which was further up the road near to Prospect Place. I seem to remember it being a Spar shop at one time and was owned by people who I think then went onto manage the Odd Fellows.

It would be interesting to see some old photos of the shop and I wish you well with your quest for them,do post them here if you manage to acquire any.

Whilst I have been away from Pakefield for many years it is a place I always visit at least a couple of times a year doing a tour of my childhood haunts,it is a magical place where the church bells can be heard around the village, where you can often hear the roar and crash of the waves on the beach even when you are in your garden.

I wish you well with your renovations and will next time I am in Pakefield have a look to see how you are progressing.

Go to the research section of lowestoft library and ask them. The staff are extremely helpful and they may well have info concerning your house. Give it a try.

Good luck with your research.  Here's a little more information for you.  Maybe this is your house, or maybe you can do a little reseach for me & find out which house it is.

From the bottom of the page of this website we learn that,

" At the southern end of Lowestoft, a smuggler's tunnel leads from the cellar of a certain house in Florence Road, and comes out behind the altar in Pakefield church - or so it's said."

This could be where the tunnel is supposed to come up, but I looked & couldn't find it.

The entrance to the so called tunnel is not behind the altar but located between the two churches ( All Saints and Saint Margaret's)parallel to the altar. On the floor is a large flag stone which if removed will allow access, indeed as a lad I have been down exploring,at that time it was rumoured to be linked to the white house on the corner of Florence road and Saxon road,(opp'side to the shop and on the other corner)in my time the people who lived there were named Castleton, builders I seem to recall.

What can I tell you about the so called tunnel? Sorry I do not intend to reveal, let us allow the mystery to live on,that is the Magic of our Pakefield.

I grew up with that rumour too - wasn't the white cottage the old rectory?

Thanks for the info on the sweet shop, its really interesting.  Its so nice to have a bit more info about the old place.  I'm also quite interested in the buildings at the rear - i think it used to be a smokehouse a long time ago.  Its been converted into a house & is occupied by my Mum these days.

No 44 is no longer a shop -  my Dad had the fireplace business but  recently died leaving us the house to renovate.

I think you are right the white house just down from you on the other side was the Rectory, it would make sense, as it has a more direct line to the church, and when we were kids we were told about the tunnel to the church, I don't think it was uncommon to have these.
