Lowestoft's Community First Responders
« Posted: 23 July 2010 at 02:34 PM »
Lowestoft Responders is a group of dedicated volunteers who respond on behalf of the East of England Ambulance NHS Trust in and around our local area. The area which we cover is; Hopton, Lound, Herringfleet, Somerleyton, Blundeston, Flixton, Corton, Oulton, Oulton Broad, Lowestoft, Kirkley, Pakefield, Carlton Colville, Gisleham and Kessingland.
The volunteers are trained by the East of England Ambulance NHS Trust in Emergency First Aid to a level which enables the Community First Responders to undertake the role, this also includes the use of a Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
The calls which we attend are; Abdonimal Pains, Allergies, Non-Traumatic Back Pain, Breathing Problems, Cardiac/Respiratory Arrest, Chest Pains, Choking, Fitting, Diabetic Problems, Drowning (near), Falls, Headaches, Heart Problems, Sick Person, Stroke/CVA, Unconscious/Passing Out.
The group responds to about 400+ calls a year, and receives no payment for the serivce which they provide.
Lowestoft Responders currently have 9 active members with a further 2 who are going through the application stages

This is all the equipment that we need and use to attend 999 emergency calls...
We hold training sessions once a month to make sure that we are all up to date on procedures and techniques...
We are always looking for new members to join our Team, we are also looking for admin/fund raising members. So if you have some spare time and think you could attend 999 emergencies within your community then now's the time to get in touch
If you are interested, or have any questions then you can either reply to this post, contact me via PM or you can

I think it is a great idea, if it means those few seconds before an ambulance arrives and saves a life
The trouble is ambulances can be stuck in traffic (bridge).

I think it’s a great idea - and congratulations to those who got this “up and running” - and to all the volunteers. I think that you “hit the nail on the head”, funky, with your comment that “these are as well as - not instead of”.

With all NHS ambulances coming from Gorleston nowadays (so I hear) its a good idea to have these volunteers on standby already located in this town (I think I see their ambulance is parked up Hamilton Road by the Newcome road Junction). They will in most cases get there first to see what the situation is eg if someone falls ill in the Britten Centre or trips on the seafront. Could mean the difference in life or death.
