This was the address of 5th Provisional Brigade, British Army, in 1916. I have a letter from this body addressed to 5th Provisional Yeomanry Squadron, Oulton Broad, regarding the condition of their horses. Is this property still identifiable ? Where in Oulton Broad were the Yeomanry based ?

Robert Jarvis, Curator at LWMM may know, he's covered many other aspects of local military history whereas I've only cornered the aviation market. He does not do internet, so I'll print a copy of your enquiry for him and let you know if he comes up with anything.

Thank you Mr Bomb. In the course of looking at WW1 history I have found that a lot of Yeomen went to Oulton Broad to be discharged, usually when their Territorial Service was completed. I look forward to learning whatever can be discovered.

I can now see that the surviving buildings on the Esplanade begin with number 17, so the building I sought is no longer there - just a car park and kids play area. I was interested to see that the telephone number of 16, Esplanade was "Lowestoft 34" in 1916.

16 Esplanade was St. John's Home of Rest for Clergy, from the 13th. January 1914, a formal opening service was held at St. John Church.
They are certainly there in 1915 too
Number 17 was the (new) Rectory to St. Johns.
I am left wondering if this was in fact the address for correspondence, rather than a operation base?
Most of the missing properties of the Esplanade were demolished around 1931, sadly many to make way for a new car

I have no evidence other than one letter sent from this address but it does appear to be the HQ - even quotes the Tel No of Lowestoft 34. Perhaps they had the use of one floor; I guess this was a four(?) storey building like the surviving properties.
