Bombardment of Lowestoft 1916 « Posted: 05 June 2010 at 01:51 PM »

Have just been sorting out some of my sheet music and books and amongst them I found a small ‘book’ which I don’t recall having - it just doesn’t register with me at all! It’s titled: “Bombardment of Lowestoft by the Germans” and is priced at 1/- Nett - and contains about a dozen pictures (taken by H Jenkins) of South Lowestoft area after being bombed 25 April 1916.  However, I do think some of them may have been shown on here a year or so ago.

1. London Road South - am wondering if the building marked “Photographers” was that of H Jenkins - who took the photos.

2. Cottages, Carlton Road

3. The Book's cover.

Most of the shells went over the town and landed at Camps Heath. According to my book a small flotillla of The Royal Navy steamed up from the south and the Germans made a quick get away.

Most of the pictures in this book are: the Esplanade, Cleveland Road,  Carlton Road areas - plus a couple in Clemence Street and Harvey Street.

But not as much as they would have done if the shells had been HE and not AP.

Approx 60 shells (11 inch) landed in and around the town, some in fields at Corton, Gunton and Oulton Broad.

As well as seven large buildings considerably damaged, approx 40 suffered extensive damage and 200 minor (some reports -including one on Wicki have erroneously stated "200 houses destroyed" which is grossly exaggerated).

Seven of the shells did not explode. The one which passed through 13 houses in Kent Road is/was the one exhibited at the LMM.

Damage amounted to £25,000. You can work out what that equates to in today's money !

4 people were killed and 12 injured.

There were also two raids by Zeppelins and one by seaplanes.
