Barkaway and Wood KIA in WW1 at Fromelles « Posted: 30 March 2010 at 03:39 PM »

The story of the recovered bodies at Fromelles is well known I think.  Just look in any search engine and you will learn a lot.

I quote from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission:-

"January 2010 Update:
The UK MoD have released an updated list of British casualties for whom they have had no contact made with next of kin and for whom they need additional contacts. (TWO NAMES EXTRACTED)

BARKAWAY, FREDERICK WILLIAM Private 267121 2nd/1st Bucks Bn. Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry

WOOD, STANLEY Lance Corporal 5342 2nd/1st Bucks Bn. Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry"

Both are Lowestoft/Oulton Broad men.  Wood was only 19; Barkaway I cannot be sure, but possibly younger.  They were formerly Suffolk Regiment men who were transferred with many others to the OBLI.

You can see this information at http://www.cwgc.org/fromelles/?page=english/the-project/casualty_lists

I did try to interest the Journal but did not even get a reply.

There is in fact only a fairly small chance of these boys being there and a smaller chance still of being identified; but they deserve some respect in death if they are there.

Maybe someone out there can help the MOD/CWGC.

I have edited this topic to include in the heading the names of two Lowestoft men whose families are being sought by CWGC/UK MOD.  Maybe, just maybe......................

To bring this topic to a close ...... of the 250 bodies recovered 94 Australians have been positively identified, with another 111 known to be AIF men; but only 3 UK soldiers have been  positively identified, with 42 UK soldiers remaining ‘Known unto God’.  The final burial takes place on July 19th.
