Nora and Jim BATES -Lost Cousins/Uncle, Modified !!!
« Posted: 10 March 2010 at 09:01 AM »
Hola Lowestoft,from Spain
Due to my parents divorce in the 50's lost touch with Aunt Gladys Noreen Bates nee Lunt, SHE WAS ALWAYS CALLED NORA.
(now deceased buried in Waveney 1982 ) and her husband James Bates.
They had daughters Jacqueline and Patricia, who probably have married.
The only address I have is the one from the Waveney cemetery site -12 Victoria Road Lowestoft.
I have been trying for 10 years to find this part of my family,as my elderly sister wanted to contact her cousins, they were very close as children in N. Ireland.
I had a quick look at 192.com electoral rolls for Lowestoft 2002-3 and there was a James Bates, and a Jacqueline REID AND A THOMAS R REID at same home.
Would anyone be able to help?
Please
Many Thanks

Hello Elsa-Mary
I've today checked the 1982 Electoral Register for 12, Victoria Road:
BATES Gladys N.
BATES James
REID Jacqueline
REID Thomas
So the people you found online, do indeed seem to be your family. I'd just remind you though, that the Entry you found was 2002/3, so they may have since moved.

Hello Jinksy
Thank You, for confirming that info.
It really does seem to be my family- on the little bit of the roll I was able to see,Jacqueline 's name was Jacqueline R Reid, and Thomas Reid.
It seems that Gladys N Bates died in1982 and is buried in Kirkley Cemetery.
I used the UKELECTORAL ROLL site -but was unable to find what was partially on 192!!!
So far ,I have tried telephone directories for Suffolk-and made contact with at least eight persons with the name of Reid-ALL have been charming but sadly not my relatives.
I am just totally stumped,as they do not seem too appear again on the roll sit I have searched.
I have tried quite a few telephone directories for the surname Reid J AND T.
i HAVE JUST BEEN HOPING NOW SOMEONE may know them and point me in the right direction,as you say they may have moved, and sadly James Bates may have passed away as he would be a grand age now for sure-still my other Aunt in Canada born in 1917 is still alive!! so you never know!!!
Many thanks,I do appreciate your help,at last I know for sure now these are definately my family.

An excellent idea fc!
Next time I'm in town, I'll take a look at that address in Worlingham to try & find if/when they left too.

Hi All,
When I searched the burials in Kirkley, the address given at that time was 12 Victoria Rd. Lowestoft.
You will appreciate as I am in Spain, apart from knowing where Lowestoft is I knows
nossing about the area
(I am from Barcelona lol)
It seems as if after Gladys's death 1982 , they dropped off the earth!!!
So sorry do not have any more details of the family, but they are definately my family.
Thanks

If they were in Worlingham in 2002/3 (as stated on 192.com), that's not far from here Elsa-Mary. But I've never used that site before & so don't know how accurate that information is. I'll try & find them in Worlingham on local Electoral Register.
There was a phone number listed on 192 for the family in Worlingham, but again I don't know if it's accurate? I'm sending you a PM with the number.

Thanks for PM, Elsa-Mary.
Sorry you had no luck. Unfortunately these things happen when trying to trace family. As I said earlier, I'm not sure how accurate the 192 data is.

Hi,JINKSY
Just to let you know I have contacted Lowestoft Journal and asked if letter could be published re Jacqueline and Patricia.
iF YOU GET THE TIME!! and are able to get to town that look up maybe useful.
Of course they may have moved after parents death, although funnily enough have not been able to find death of James Bates,I noticed on the 192 site that it had James B Bates and Jacqueline and Thomas Reid.
There is a remote chance he maybe alive.
Dont think there is any more that can be done now, unless I get a break through.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Elsa-Mary
I checked the 2002/3 Electoral Register earlier today...there were only 4 houses listed in Coppleston Close. Numbers 1-4 only. Nobody listed in them from your BATES/REID family. Later Electoral Registers are only available now via the Town Hall, some needing a special appointment to view...due to privacy Law changes.
Whilst at the Record Office, I noted there's no Death listed in Waveney for James BATES before 2001.
I'm pleased to hear you've contacted the Journal!

The Journal's a good bet Elsa mary as I said before one day I saw a letter in there looking for my family I contacted the number and it was a second cousin who I had no idea I had and it was quite eye opening as his family were all born and bred down in London area and he thought we at some time had moved up to Suffolk but I was able to show hime the family tree back to 1680 and show him how they had moved away from the rest of the family not the other way round

Thanks for all your trouble Jinksy,
Strange how they disappear after 2002/3?, did try looking for marriage of Jacqueline to Thomas R Reid,-but nothing on Freebmd-,BUT then again only guessing marriage date.
Just haven't got enough info really.
Funkychick,Wow,thats amazing to get back that far with your tree-I am totally stuck at c 1798, Sefton Liverpool, and would need to search Church Records at Sefton to get any further back,a little difficult as I AM IN SPAIN!!!!!
I CAN ONLY HOPE,that someone who knows this family sees the journal, provided the Journal publishes it!!!
Perhaps the Journal will contact me to let me know-I hope so.
Cheers
