One of the latest recruits « Posted: 23 January 2010 at 10:22 PM »

Hello Everyone.
I registered on the site just a few days ago after discovering its existence. So decided to 'join up'. I am finding it a most interesting site - reading through a lot of the postings.
My nickname is Robbie, Scottish born (1938) but married to a Lowestoft lass. (She knows a lot about her home town and will be able to help me with future postings). We married in 1962 whilst I was serving in the Royal Navy (Radio Electrical Branch). We met at the South Pier dance hall - the ship I was on was visiting the town on Fishery Protection duties. After my demob in 1965 we set up home in a new bungalow in Pound Farm Drive, near Oulton. We have three sons and five grandchildren. We lived there until 1988 and then moved to our present home in Akethorpe Way. I worked at the Pye factory from 1965 until the factory closure in 1981 as a Test Equipment Technician. During my employment with Pye/Philips I was for most of that time the Senior Shop Steward for the Technical Staff Section of the EEPTU.  Since then I have been self employed running my small Electronics Services business from my workshop in Gorleston. Although I am now well past retirement age I still keep the business going - I am learning something new every day in the electronics field as technology increases at a pace - that is what probably keeps me going! I have a keen interest in local history, particularly about the Parish of Oulton and have served as a parish councillor there for over 20 years. I have constructed/compiled two websites for the parish. One is for the benefit of parishioners to convey information about their parish and its history. The other was done to Honour the Fallen of WW1, WW2 and the Falklands War who were associated with the parish. This site gives details of the Book of Remembrance that I compiled/constructed (I do a bit of woodwork as well as electronics!). The book is installed within the Oulton Community Centre church. It can be viewed by contacting the caretaker.
My other interests are researching family history - my Scottish roots and also that of my wife. Her late uncle (George 'Bloater' Nicholson) was for many years the landlord of the 'Rising Sun' that was (as you all probably know) situated in the now gone Beach Village. I also do a bit of oil painting/ drawing etc., as well as play an accordion (mainly Scottish tunes!!)

The website addresses are:-

http://www.oultonparishbookofremembrance.weebly.com

I look forward to contributing to this excellent site and make some new friends along the way.

Welcome, Robbie.  I hope you enjoy this site.  Sounds like you used to live near where my grandparents did.  They had a bungalow on June Avenue.  I'm another member that lives in the US.  I look forward to reading your posts here.

Hi Karen

Thanks for your 'welcome' message. June Avenue (near Fir Lane) is a bit closer to my present home than it was to my previous one.

Hi Meg

I mentioned some of my oil paintings to you when I replied to your 'personal message' yesterday. I've attached a couple of photos of my work. One is from the Ford Jenkins collection (done from a monochrome photo of some Lowestoft beachmen playing cribbage- I had to envisage the probable colours!). The photo isn't too good so will have to take another one sometime. As I said I received permission from the photography business he founded. This picture hangs in my workshop office. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of the painting I donated to the Maritime Museum (the one of the old Lowestoft Beachman with the two children). The other is my 'copy' of the Laughing Cavalier (original by Frans Hals).

Hi Eileen

Many thanks for your 'welcome' message and your remark regarding my painting. Gosh! there appears to be lots of nice young ladies left Lowestoft for the USA - now I know where they all went!! Never mind, I did find one here and we've just celebrated 48 years together.

Hi Meg

Attached is a far better photo of my oil painting 'Lowestoft Beachmen playing Cribbage'.
I took the painting out of its glazed frame to avoid getting reflections when I took the photo. The names of the men and their ages at the time the original Ford Jenkins photo, that it is copied from, were: (left to right) William Hook aged 75, Matthew Colman aged 81, Tom Colman aged 80 and William Bewaerd aged 76.  William Hook incidentally was the person who features in the photo (ref: my painting in the Maritime Museum) with the little boy and girl looking up at him. I must try and get a photo of this one as well. An enlargement of the latter picture appeared in the window of the Ford Jenkins Art Shop (near the bridge) for many years. I admired it for ages then went in and bought copies of the two photos and did the oil paintings (with permission).

Hi again Meg

Forgot to mention in my last post. The scratchmarks on the end of the table were caused by William Hook lighting matches for his pipe!!

Hello suffolkboy. Welcome back! Smiley

Thanks Jinksy, was a little lonely on the other site plus I had to keep logging in most times I visited the site. Guess what? Second time on LOL this morning and now having to log in here each time. I am going to have to seriously have a look behind the scenes to see what alterations I have made as previously I only ever logged in the once when I joined LOL. icon_scratch
