I did a little research, Meg. But noteable lowestoft historians such as Ivan Bunn have done much more extensive first hand research, & also come up with nothing.
Doesn't Gary have a tunnel from his house to St Margaret's church!

If it helps at all (!) when I lived in a block of flats in the High St, the cellar looked pretty old and was where all our electric meters were stored. There were several junctions off the main hallway of the cellar which ended abruptly, and I did think at the time they could have been old tunnels blocked off.

No, my tunnel goes into the M & S food department, very handy!
That particular tunnel was rumoured to go from The Swan Inn (atop Swan Score, now Mariners Score) and was also rumoured to have been dug by Cromwell himself.
But since Cromwell had taken over the town at the time, why would he have needed to build tunnels for smuggling or otherwise?
There is no evidence whatsoever to support that any such tunnels have ever existed.
All of the cellars that I have seen in the High Street (including my own) are quite strange in the way they are designed and in many there seem to be more than one entrance/exit blocked off. Some of these actually appear to line up with other houses in the High Street! It is also rumoured that much of the Northern end of the High Street was built across an old monastery and given that many of the cellars resemble crypts and cloisters, this is how all the rumours started. There are also quite a few people over the years that claim to have seen ghostly apparitions of monks, which all adds to the intrigue of the entire area and still fuels the "Tunnels" speculation even to this day - SPOOKY!

, if you extended under the bridge you would not have to wait in the queue and you could charge people to use it!

There are already two tunnels under the river, although they aren't particularly glamorous, and a lot of steps the climb to get in and out.

I only know of the one maintenance tunnel.
I still like the idea of finding secret tunnels or rooms in the old cellars - used to love reading of the Famous Five finding all kinds of hidden things in old houses!! I hasten to add I was a bit younger then!!!
