Hi Nick B
I don't think the tunnel exists..
1, There was no need for one to the beach over such a long distance?
2, Geologically there is no record.
It may be that the church building had/has undergound extensions as many buildings of this period had.
It'll be news to me if a long tunnel was built.

If any tunnels had exicted they would have found them when they cut the railway line through.

They may have found them and blocked them up?

There are also many tales of smugglers' tunnels from various addresses on the High Street to St. Margaret's church. But when you think of the effort involved in the construction of such a long tunnel, compared to the ease of the smugglers simply landing their cargos further up the shore, it's unlikely they were ever built.
A pity, as the idea of smugglers' tunnels does have a certain appeal!

I love Lowestoft but I love Oklahoma more!

I had always heard there was a tunnel from St.Margaret's Church to the High Street and it dated from Oliver Cromwell's time.I think Joe did a lot of research but never found any truth in this.

I did a little research, Meg. But noteable lowestoft historians such as Ivan Bunn have done much more extensive first hand research, & also come up with nothing.
Doesn't Gary have a tunnel from his house to St Margaret's church!

If it helps at all (!) when I lived in a block of flats in the High St, the cellar looked pretty old and was where all our electric meters were stored. There were several junctions off the main hallway of the cellar which ended abruptly, and I did think at the time they could have been old tunnels blocked off.

Quite a handy tunnel gary , if you extended under the bridge you would not have to wait in the queue and you could charge people to use it! There are already two tunnels under the river, although they aren't particularly glamorous, and a lot of steps the climb to get in and out.

I only know of the one maintenance tunnel.
I still like the idea of finding secret tunnels or rooms in the old cellars - used to love reading of the Famous Five finding all kinds of hidden things in old houses!! I hasten to add I was a bit younger then!!!

I know of 3 tunnels in LT and 3 in YH.
The most impressive one by a mile is Anglia Water in YH.
Don't think they open it to public though.

Three in Lowestoft? Now I'm intrigued. One is next to the bascule bridge, which is the largest and owned by Anglian Water. One is a bit further along the river which carries electricity cables. (and last time I heard was totally flooded) Where is the third prof?

Oulton Broad bridge is third.
That makes LT 4 YH 3
AW YH 1 is the only real tunnel that I know of..
Has anyone photos of this one, a great feat of engineering, you need a bicycle to view it in full...

AW is the only real tunnel AW-YH1 as you can walk thro it in fresh air.

The Anglian Water tunnel next to the bascule bridge can be walked through. Although for H&S reasons you have to have forced air ventilation or confined space equipment when accessing it.
Prof, where is the tunnel by the OB bridge?

As a PROF Engineer I will not put details on an open website.
There may be some nutters who would want to have that knowledge of entry/exit tunnels.
I for one will not disclose any details
Please respect the end of this topic.

That is just a complete cop-out. There isn't one in O.B., is there? As a "PROF" engineer why were you discussing it in the first place then? How do two in Lowestoft and one in O.Broad make four? Now they may be ducts, and not tunnels?

There are 14 utility crossings that I know of in LT, some tunnelled some sub-ducted.
LT14 YH12 and others...
I know where all of these are and there is no way I'm going to list them ( for prof reasons or be tempted) to score a point against someone who should know better!
Most towns have the same set of connections.

If there is one in OB then it isn't next to or connected with the bridge or anywhere beneath the broad itself AFAIK.
And I can hardly believe there are security-sensitive tunnels in Lowestoft. They are all utility tunnels which aren't "secret" and all info is in the public domain. Maybe Prof is playing spies today. and wants an air of mystery about him.

Just been reading all the postings on this subject of tunnels and became interested when I read St Margaret's church until I realized it wasn't Pakefield church. During my childhood days I was made aware of the existence of a tunnel from Pakefield church which was rumoured to lead to a house located in Florence Road.
Other tunnels which during my childhood (and Michael Foreman's)were our playground used to be located up near the rifle range where hide and seek could be played out for hours on end. These tunnels,I believe were the property of the MOD.

There must be several ducts/tunnels for all the gas/elect/water/sewage/tele ect. If some one wants to bring Lowestoft to a stand still there is no need to blow up one of these tunnels, just hire a boat and get the bridge opened.

It's owned by Anglian Water actually. It's a fascinating tunnel Nikkai, made from cast iron segments bolted together, (if you're into construction techniques) and around 9ft diameter. They don't allow public access though as it's their highest category confined space. In fact it's quite an exercise to access it.

No fear on the CS had to undertake CST (confined space training) in a space where SDBA can not be worn but had to be handled in and out of holes that were just large enough to get me through and with just about zero light. It is a wonder the body can do what it is asked of in some situations.
Even though I am happy in a CS I would never undertake potholing
Still would like a look

WDC sent detailed photographs to all utilities to rebuild the ironwork, I represented 2 big companies on the project and WDC were lead partners and carried out the refurb project.
Nobody may want to own it. WDC SCC and highways will take due diligence on the old bascule tunnel.
AW-YH1 is the tunnel u ought to try and visit Its HUGE!!! (you will need a bicycle)

Are you talking about the refurb carried out in about 1997? If you are, I was project engineer for the scheme. It was lead and managed by WDC, but on behalf of Anglian Water. I was a drainage engineer for WDC at the time, carrying out AW's capital and maintenance contracts.
