Please Help « Posted: 28 November 2009 at 11:06 AM »

 hello
I am writing a book about my child hood year and where I grow up and I would like some
help please. I was told years ago there was a tunnel from st maraget's church to the beach. I cannot find anything about it I went to the St mareget's church web site but there wasnt anything about it there.
So could any one help me out please? At the moment I am living in spain so the internet is my only means of getting information.
I would be greatfull of any information if there are any books I can get them once we have moved back to england.
Thank you

Hi Nick B

I don't think the tunnel exists..

1, There was no need for one to the beach over such a long distance?

2, Geologically there is no record.

It may be that the church building had/has undergound extensions as many buildings of this period had.

It'll be news to me if a long tunnel was built.

If any tunnels had exicted they would have found them when they cut the railway line through.

They may have found them and blocked them up?

There are also many tales of smugglers' tunnels from various addresses on the High Street to St. Margaret's church.  But when you think of the effort involved in the construction of such a long tunnel, compared to the ease of the smugglers simply landing their cargos further up the shore, it's unlikely they were ever built.

A pity, as the idea of smugglers' tunnels does have a certain appeal!

A great tourist attraction if it (they) existed. A magnificent feat of engineering.

I  had always heard there was a tunnel from St.Margaret's Church to the High Street and it dated from Oliver Cromwell's time.I think Joe did a lot of research but never found any truth in this.
