It is funny funky, we have a sex-shop here right near the esplanade (wrong place anyway) and it was to be closed a month or so ago, but I notice it is still selling, in spite of the local protests, very..........strange.   icon_scratch Smiley

Erm, a bong is used to inhale 'alternative' herbs!
I'm sure it could also be used to smoke legal substances such as dried banana skins too!!

The law used to be that you could sell them 'for ornamental purposes' only.  But now the government has brought in new laws to ban the actual sale of them altogether.  Should be interesting to see what happens now.

What do bongs and Greenpeace have in common? Surely anything giving off smoke unnecessarily isn't green, unless it's more to do with the type of person who associates with them!? Wink

No i genuinely had no idea what it was and had never heard the word before in this context. Sometimes these things slip past us.

The hippy shop is called The Head Shop, and by the looks of it will be selling things such as bongs and other smoking paraphenalia.  Personally i think they need to be very careful, as Trading Standards will be very interested in their goods.  Annatars were raided last year for selling similar, which is why they spent 6 months trying to sell the business - their main trade stopped.  I myself was going to open up similar year before last but the MHRA (Medicine and Healthcare Regulation Authority) told me there was going to be a huge crackdown on such business and strongly advised me not to start up.
Really, I am surprised as you usually don't want to follow rules and regulations,However, I'm glad my education is such, that ,I know nothing about using/taking drugs or the implements required.

Actually, to be honest it was my fathers 'strong' words that made me change my mind!  I was all for it, as I thought it was within the law (at that time) and the profit margins were very good.  But it seems silly to start up a business and work long hours building it up when you know that it is doomed within a few years to failure.  Also, as my father pointed out, you run the risk of major interference from the police, from Trading Standards and also potentially from 'unofficial' dealers angry at you encroaching on their territory.

Most similar shops I have seen in this country have closed down, so will be interesting to see how The Head Shop plans to survive.
