Charity shops !

They pay greatly reduced amount of rates, in some cases they will take on short lease shops to get a good deal on the rent as well.

Management staff are paid a little above the minimum wage but all other staff work for nothing.
Stock in many cases is supplied free although to stay in business they must make a profit.

There are many types of charity shops which include all the big names plus many independants and some are just secondhand shops that state they will give a percentage of their profit to a particular charity.

If better shops wanted to come to Lowestoft, the charity shops wouldn't go away, they'd just relocate to less prominent sites. The landlords aren't renting to them because the charity shops are their first choice.

I don't see anything wrong with them at all, like Snowdrop says, they have a lot of good points. One person's "junk" is another person's "vintage".

I was hoping it was going to be taken over by Grace Bros - I do miss Mrs Slocombe!  Grin
