Hi how much of a DIY man is hubby?
Yes from what you say it does sound like your heat exchanger is a bit furred up. but just because this may be so it does not go to say you need to get a new one. (or a plumber to sort it out)
the heat exchanger is a small box that the gas flame heat so therefore transferring that heat to your water which is circulated bu a small electric pump.
most H/E are removable without touching the gas side of the boiler so you don't need a plumber with a corgi reg licence. If you have a combi then there is two H/E units one small for domestic water one larger for C/H the small is normally first to be heated and so easiest to remove. once out place in a large sauce pan and add some "ozz" kettle defurring crystals as per instructions for kettles then flush out (repeat for the stubborn area's) refit and turn waters back on vent and enjoy hot water again.
By the way you dont need to drain down combi systems, there are turn valves at the boiler mount where ALL the water and gas can be isolated, to top up connect your umbilical pipe, open both filling valves until correct water amount, turn off and remove the umbilical pipe.
sorry if this is long to read, why spen lots of dosh when you can D I Y.

Sounds like you have had bad experience with the plumber brigade. sorry to hear that. make sure that you have the system protected with chemical (fernox) there are others on the market, and get it flushed out when the work is done. It sounds like there is a lot of scale within your water system and it will quickly clog any small pipe H/E or valve making the boiler over work therefore causing a domino effect to the problem.
I know that to have your whole system chemically cleaned will be a bit costly but future maintenance will be less of a burden. the water in this area is very poor IMHO I drain, flush and refill my combi every 2 years and add the Fernox before I fill with water so that the incoming water is well mixed with the additive.

I will let you know how we get on Nikkai......I think I will get a couple of plumbers in to quote and compare what they say, but I really need to get it sorted.
Thanks for your advice we did have Fernox in the system but must admit it has not been changed since back in 2007.

Hi there all,
Did anyone find a plumber who is OK. I too have had a bunch and not been pleased with the work. I could call British gas at last resort. Please do advise.

Without being disrespectful, isn't CORGI now no longer the recognised body, this has been replaced by the Gas Safe Register which I see that they - Echo Plumbing - are registered with.
Reasons behind Gas Safe (formerly CORGI registered)
For many years, CORGI Gas Engineers have stood for safety, expertise and trust. A review carried out by the Health and Safety Executive led to the new gas registration scheme, which aims to provide a clearer focus on gas safety and a simpler registration procedure.
As a result, CORGI gas registration is now no longer recognised or valid by law in both Great Britain and the Isle of Man.
Whilst CORGI continue to trade as a business, they are no longer the official stamp for Gas Safety in Great Britain and the Isle of Man.
The above extract from British Gas website.
