Posting Unapproved and Misleading Links « Posted: 31 July 2009 at 01:58 PM »

We have quite a few new members come on board to LOL lately and I want to make sure everyone understands the rules regarding posting of links.  In particular, we had a topic in the IT section labeled "Funny Sites" and in the topic a few new members posted links that were either not funny or about IT.

It appeared that they could be links that would be commercial or encourage LOL members to download programs to their computers.  I didn't look in to it further, for obvious reasons, so I can't tell LOL member exactly what was on the sites, but I would strongly encourage all of our members NOT to download FireFox or IE7 from any site except for the main Microsoft or Mozilla sites.

LOL members cannot post links to commercial sites or fish for customers on this site. Do not set up misleading topics and topic titles trying to redirect members to your sites. The admin here also takes a very dim view of sites that have the potential for downloading spambots and malware on to our member's computers.  Members that continue to do these things will be banned from LOL in accordance with forum rules.

This is a large site, so if any member comes across a suspicious posting and the mods and admin haven't caught it yet, please pm one of us and we'll take care of it.

This is exactly the reason we have the rules on links that we have.  We welcome all of our new members,  but occasionally a person come on board who is not here for the camaraderie but for their own purposes.  If that is not the case here, I apologize in advance.  But please, to all members,  do not post links unless they are to major journalistic sources or are simply for informational purposes and if there is any doubt, just pm a mod or admin with the link for prior approval.  I know this can be a bit irritating at times, but it's the best way we have to keep  LOL as safe as possible for all it's members.

Yours was the only link to a humorous site, so I think you were just taking the topic posting title in good faith.  If there was humor in the other posts, I missed it.  Don't worry about it.  I'm more concerned with links that encourage downloads and buying things.

Could it be that you are taking yourself and this site far too seriously? This is a forum mainly based around Lowestoft not a huge international organisation.
By posting even recommendations of local services could we be in  danger of breaking Forum Rules should this, Heaven forbid, encourage use to use their services?
Just lighten up a little and take it as it is.........a really good forum that works really well.
I think we can all judge for ourselves any real exploitation that might go on!

Maybe so.... but the forum administrators are also held responsible for what goes on here.  That's the law and for a  volunteer job I'm not willing to spend one minute with a local ambulance chaser explaining why someone's computer was hacked because they downloaded a site that they thought was "approved" by LOL.  We also try to keep the links "family friendly".  As you know, there are people out there whose job it is to publicize their websites and a lot of those sites are porn, spam, malware or gateway sites for identity theft.  LOL is a club and we don't want our members to have to wade through a lot of trash to use this site the way it was intended.

There is always a balance between being a net nanny and giving people the freedom to post what they want here and I know that it occasionally gets tiresome for the vast majority of members who follow the rules.  But in the end, I think most people appreciate this site's restrictions and know that we try to accommodate members the best we can.

Hi Alice,
It isn't fun doing doing system policing but better a warning word than anyone getting into more trouble than they need.
Keep up the good work

Alice you and the other moderators here show a remarkable amount of calmness and equilibrium and I wanted to add my thanks to mrTibbs.  You're certainly calmer under provocation than I.
