Priory Farm Restaurant, St Olaves « Posted: 04 July 2009 at 08:36 AM »

Not strictly Lowestoft (although it was once) but right on the border and well worth a visit. An unusual setting in the grounds of a ruined priory make this an unusual but interesting choice for dining out. Not the cheapest restaurant by any means but not the most expensive either and you get what you pay for. The bar area is very small and there is not much seating but I have never found that to be a problem. The food is always excellent and plentiful and the staff are always friendly and welcoming. There is a staggering choice of food here, as well as the extensive menu there are many daily chefs specials on the blackboard too and your only dilemma here will be in trying to decide what to eat! The restaurant serves a wide range of dishes including traditional English food, International and a selection of fresh fish. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and you are even greeted by Llamas on arrival and the restaurant itself is quite large and in a lovely location. For a romantic meal for two then simply request an "alcove" table (seats up to 4) when you book, nice and private!  Kiss Kiss

If we have a special occasion to celebrate, we always go to The Priory Farm Restaurant at St Olaves.

Seems like a very popular venue among us locals and makes me wonder if we haven't already met before without realising! Roll Eyes
As for the Llamas, I think they are much more attractive in the outside pens than on a plate or in a bun!  Grin

I went to Priory farm maybe 5-7 years ago and was impressed. I like nice steaks Wink
If it's still under the same management and Chef de Cuisine (or better), then I think , I must go there again soon.
Sometimes it's nice to go out of town but not too far.

Browston Hall used to be good 15-20 years ago, has anyone been there lately?

Sad Had a very nice meal here last year and looked to return to celebrate the same occasion with a party of twelve dining at 07:30 (due to having some small children with us). I was not happy at all though to be told that we could only have the table for two hours then we'd have to vacate it. When I protested the person I spoke to said tough (in more words than that but that was the upshot) that's how we run it here. So basically go if you want to be rushed, hurried and kicked off your table to the bar once they have your money. The food is good but not that good and there are better restaurants nearby (The Red Herring in Oulton Broad or the White Lion at Wheatacre for example) .

If that is the case i will not go there. They do nice food and have enjoyed eating there in the past but having eaten a lot in France we like to take our time and make an evening of the meal usually with good company.

I personally dont think 2 hours is ureasonable especially if there are other places to sit, a bar or nice seated area, after all longer than that and the restaurant will only have time to use the table once in the evening, how will they make their evenings money if all the 7.30 tables stay there for three hours. I t does however sound unreasonable how you were told

If you book your table before 7.30pm then yes they do ask you to leave after two hours but if you book for 8pm  you can stay for as long as you want within reason. They point this out at the time of booking so it is obviously up to you whether you go ahead.  Personally speaking I have had numerous celebratory meals there and I can't fault one of them.

I think that if I had booked at 7.30 because of small children , I would welcome getting away with them after 2 hours.  I have had this experience elsewhere we once went to lunch at a restaurant [the name escapes me] and half way through the meal , a waiter came and plonked a notice on the table saying "this table will be required for other people at  1.30pm.

If you want fast food go to Wong kei's  in Soho, fantastic food, cheap as chips but you do not sit soooo busy as soon as you finished they tell you quite impolitly  ' up up go go you finish'  they then tear any dirty bits of  the paper table clothes and plonk the next people in. Totally eccentric but peopel flock to it,  three floors and always full, its a great experience

Don't think I'll bother, FC.  There used to be a lovely restaurant not too far away from Soho just off Regent Street (may still be there but I'm going back 30 years now) called 'Martina's'.  That certainly wasn't fast food.  You could choose your fish as it was swimming around in the 'aquarium'.

I dont mean always malcolm just for the experience I m told it not so ferocious and the waiters not so hilariously rude nowadays but the food was great and it was like taking part in a pantomime  You were always sat at a table with strangers and it was just pure fun if you accepted it as that and didnt expect the Ritz Maybe because I used to live in the Far East I could appreciate the food and understand the different way of life which was nostalgic for me, I do  miss that part of the world sometimes it was very exciting and different .Everyone works hard and long hours(open all night) no benefit system there

Alas funky chick, whilst for some people two hours may seem long enough for a party of twelve to order and enjoy three courses may very well take longer than the alloted timespan, especially if there is a problem with say, a wrongly cooked steak (happened last time) or a mistake with the food. How are they to make their evenings money you ask? Well when I said I wasn't happy about being turfed off the table I was told that they have a loyal customer base and they were well serviced by their customers. I hope their loyal customers are fast eaters who are happy to be shoved to the bar after the restaurant has had in our case at least £227.98 plus drinks plus wine plus deserts (this is based on 12 times the pre-order menu at £18.99 a head, we were likely to actually go off the a la carte menu thus spending even more on food alone). To me it just reeks of money grabbing. They do more than 50 covers so if everyone had the preorder menu then that's nearly a grand on food alone without extras. How valued do I feel after this experience? Not at all and it will be a cold day in hell before I go back there even if somebody else is paying...

well obviously I didnt know the facts or that there were 12 people paying a lot of dosh  but someone here has said if you book the table for 8 you can stay as long as you like so maybe that would have been your best plan

Not being funny here but just who is paying whom? As a customer I should be able to choose when I eat to suit my guests and enjoy the experience not have to gee up any tardy eaters or dance to the tune of those taking my money. They are there to service ME if I'm paying not the other way around.

I agree, TGS2010 (excuse abbreviation).   If a restaurant wants a quick turnaround policy they should clearly advertise thay are a fast-food establishment.

Here's a question. :- Has anybody here ever been asked to leave a so-called fast-food restaurant (Mc Donalds, Burger King, Kentucky, etc.,) because they have been in there too long?

Re: Priory Farm Restaurant, St Olaves « Reply #35 Posted: 11 June 2011 at 10:37 PM »

In my personal opinion a restaurant is basically a place for eating, not for camping there for the whole evening. Two hours is a long time.
I could get through a whole lot of food in two hours - even with conversation and socialising.
After all, you are buying a meal, not renting the place for the night.

Freelance, when I go out for a good meal I like to relax and digest the meal between courses.  I don't like having to ask the waiter for a Rennie before I leave in case he thinks the meal wasn't satisfactory.  I hate having the next course appearing in front of me no sooner than the dishes from the previous one have been removed.  Just a personal thing, maybe.

If you stayed in a McD's or KFC for more than two hours surely your hands would have stuck permanently to the table and your feet to the floor. You'd be trapped for life.

You will get all of that at The Priory Farm providing you don't book for 7.30pm. Even then I think that this only applies to Saturdays.
