103.4 The Beach « Posted: 16 May 2009 at 11:20 AM »

Anyone remember the day that The Beach launched on the airwaves?

And does anyone have any pictures of the studios before it started and when it started?

I'm thinking the building used to be a shop

The Beach Radio Station used to be called LTR (Lowestoft Town Radio) which I think went on air about 1992-93. Great Yarmouth, at this time was also trying to get a local radio station off the ground, and eventually the pair merged to become the Beach.
The studio at the bottom of Hollingsworth Road, I remember when a lady called Bridget Anthony used to run it as a convienence store with her husband, but that was in the 70's. Grin Grin

I remember the test transmissions before it went on air, was just the sound of water crashing on a beach, I remember listening to it and finding it relaxing on a summers afternoon during the school holidays!

The beach done at least one of the test transmissions (as LTR) from the poplars school during the summer holidays while the school was empty.
The building they are in now was some kind of carers business wasnt it?
Think some of the residents from there never left and are now on the airwaves.

Due to the parent company  tryiny to save money a lot of local newsreaders/reporters have been made redundant, this has meant that the news has been centralised to the remainder of the parents companies other  radio stations,so no more local guys.
Even the radio companies these days are taking away local knowledge and talent

Everything seems to be less and less local, for example the police call centre means that everytime you ring them you have to expain where Lowestoft is,let alone what ever street you're on about.
The beach local news seems now to consist of reading bits out of the papers, usually the EDP or Jurnal, both of which are as inaccurate as they are boring.

LTR in Lowestoft and Coastal Radio in Gt Yarmouth were both doing regular 28 day stints on restricted Service Licences in the 90s, and both applied for the full time franchise. Both had a similar remit and a very similar group of enthusiasts who ran it for free. In the end, the Government selected LTR and awarded them the franchise. So we had a truly local radio service, but then, as money was required to run it, the enthusiasts were gradually replaced by businessmen and is currently owned by the Tindle Radio Group (based here in Suffolk). None of the original LTR presenters remained with the station after a while.

I guess the disadvantage of group ownership is a loss of real identity, and centralisation of some services, but this is quite common in commercial radio. They run Ipswich 102, North Norfolk and Radio Norwich too, hence the similarities between them.

The real issue with local radio is it needs to sell advertising, and this requires listeners of the kind the advertisers want - hence the programming having to be so tight.

I suspect they use selector (a software system) for their scheduling - although it would be nice to think they do it themselves. This system is the way radio stations select the music that is played. It's very clever, considers the type of listeners, the time of day, the day of the week, and station preferences, and then produces the lists of songs to be played each day. I always used to find it quite fun driving from Lowestoft to say Cornwall and as I moved out of one area to the next, I'd probably hear the same song 3 or 4 times as all the stations in the areas I was driving through used the same system.

It does mean sanitised music, of course - and hence why dedications, rather than requests are the norm in the peak listening times. In general it means you won't get any music extreme enough to make you switch channels - which is the aim of the game.

It's still nice to have a local radio station, even if it's not quite as local as we think.

Selector is an evil system - I think it's a bit like the story of We Will Rock You, where we all get exposed to the same material, even at the same time of day. If you drive about the country a lot, it's very strange when you go into a different independent radio area, and hear the same songs, over and over again. I went to Cornwall one day and started to keep count of the time the same Phil Collins was played - very annoying!

I travel around a lot and stopped listening to radio 8 years ago when I got my first mp3 player. Nowadays I listen to stations such as Jazz FM and Planet Rock on DAB. It's for that very reason.
