103.4 The Beach
« Posted: 16 May 2009 at 11:20 AM »
Anyone remember the day that The Beach launched on the airwaves?
And does anyone have any pictures of the studios before it started and when it started?
I'm thinking the building used to be a shop

The Beach Radio Station used to be called LTR (Lowestoft Town Radio) which I think went on air about 1992-93. Great Yarmouth, at this time was also trying to get a local radio station off the ground, and eventually the pair merged to become the Beach.
The studio at the bottom of Hollingsworth Road, I remember when a lady called Bridget Anthony used to run it as a convienence store with her husband, but that was in the 70's.

I remember the test transmissions before it went on air, was just the sound of water crashing on a beach, I remember listening to it and finding it relaxing on a summers afternoon during the school holidays!

The beach done at least one of the test transmissions (as LTR) from the poplars school during the summer holidays while the school was empty.
The building they are in now was some kind of carers business wasnt it?
Think some of the residents from there never left and are now on the airwaves.

Due to the parent company tryiny to save money a lot of local newsreaders/reporters have been made redundant, this has meant that the news has been centralised to the remainder of the parents companies other radio stations,so no more local guys.
Even the radio companies these days are taking away local knowledge and talent
