Old(ish) North Lowestoft pictures « Posted: 14 May 2009 at 03:04 PM »

I would be very interested if any of our members would have any pictures of North Lowestoft (St Maggies Road and the surrounding areas) from the 70's and 80's.

Having been brought up on the corner of St Mags and Oxford Road I would be very interested in hearing (and maybe seeing) any memories other members might have of those times

Don' t have any photos but remember the area and the time well.  Do you remember the little shop half way up Oxford Road on the right hand side, I think it sold toys etc?  What was the little shop at the Church Road end opposite the little food store?  I used to go to Brownies around that time at Boston Lodge.  It was always a nice area at that time, don't know what it is like now, as I have moved away.  The post office in St Margarets Road was always nice, lots of sweets to choose from I remember!  Oh and the DIY shop Addisons?  always smelt really nice. Smiley  Would like to see the photos from the 60's if poss.

Does anyone have any photos of the 1953 flood in particular the Beach village, that I can use to show my class?

There is a book called 'Wall of Water' by Royal Flaxman all about the 1953 flooding of Lowestoft and Oulton Broad.  It has lots of really good photos in it.

You may be able to get it in Waterstones too, can't remember the price, but it's not expensive.

Unfortunately, that book is out of print.  Amazon have 3 secondhand copies priced at £25 & £30 each.
The Library has a number of copies available.

Wow Trigger, why are they so expensive?  I am sure I didn't pay anything like that for mine, although mine is a paperback one. Are they hardback ones?

As the book is out of print - any secondhand-ones would be few and far between.  So, rarity makes it a more valuable commodity.

The ones I mentioned on Amazon are the paperback ones; the hardback copies they have are priced at “from” £73.19. Shocked

Treat it with a lot of TLC - and remember to wear your Marigolds if you're turning the pages!  Grin

Ooh, I have something valuable then.  I wonder if all the 'Old Lowestoft' books are as valuable too as I have all the Jack Rose Lowestoft ones as well.

Most likely not.  We often get the Jack Rose Lowestoft books in the Age Concern shop.  They are still worth money and are collectable, but not worth as much as you would hope for.

East Point I posted in another thread sometime ago that I have a numbered copy of 'The Grit' signed by both authors.  At the time someone was asking about £95 for the book on Amazon.  At the moment there is one for sale on there for £65 condition 'used - good' although the description indicates some 'damage'  Probably not signed either.

Wow BB, didn't know they fetched that sort of money.  Mind you, seriously, I like to keep my Old Lowestoft books and still read them occasionally.

Thats fine except that in order to sell on Amazon you have to pay a registration fee running into the hundreds.  That is why we dont sell on Amazon!  eBay is the usual place for 2nd hand items to be sold, and Jack Rose books do not sell for much.  As a rough guide, we normally sell the books for approximately a fiver each.

That would be fine, except that we dont sell them in the shop - because I 'know' they sell online.  In actual fact, one of the members on here often buys any Lowestoft books we have as they are a collector.

Surely you only pay a registration fee running into hundreds if you are selling as a business are you saying to sell odd books here and there you have to pay a registration fee in the hundreds JJ

Re: Old(ish) North Lowestoft pictures « Reply #28 Posted: 24 February 2012 at 10:30 AM »

I thought that as the topic was after Old(ish) pictures of North Lowie. I thought it was about time we had at least one or two pics included.
The Belle view Cottage as you may know was destroyed by fire(arson) in Feb 1990. These pics are from my Mum's archives so I thought they deserved an outing.
