Weymouth & Portland

This thread is to discuss anything to do with Weymouth & Portland.  I've started it because Sunny, who comes from Weymouth, has kindly offered to post pictures of Weymouth.  I used to live on Portland, so I have an interest in that part of the country too.

I hope this will be a photo and a discussion thread.  Anything to do with Weymouth & Portland is welcome.  I appreciate this may be a somewhat specialised interest but I hope it can work.  I have a lot of Portland photos, but they're not digital so I'd need to photograph my photos with my digital camera in order to post them.

OK, Sunny, looking forward to your pictures now.  Weymouth harbour is a lovely place, & I have many happy memories playing folk fiddle at the King's Head pub.  In fact Dorset as a county is a lovely place, it has a lot of that olde worlde charm that I've missed since coming to Lowestoft.

Just to get us started, here's a picture of Portland that I have up in my lounge.  This was taken by a helicopter pilot when there was a naval helicopter base on Portland, the base closed down while I was living there.  Above & to the left of Portland is the bottom part of Weymouth, & you can clearly see Portland harbour in this shot too.

Hey Sunny, what's that harbour pub where the boats tie up, that sells the Cornish Steam Beer? (brewed in Newquay maybe or St. Austell).  We stayed at the Hoseasons caravans one year when my wife was alive, on the boundary of Weymouth. I think it was Weymouth Bay?

Debby  you always call me a sweet lady laugh :laugh:Joe I can keep you posted as things develop here sorry I meant 92/3 , 82 was when I left working at the Naval station silly me, I hope to get you some pics of Portland soon Joe we need a few days nice dry sunny weather ok,yes Malcolm the pics of Portland and Weymouth have been on the Tele: screen just lately anyway have a good night all, I think Joe would see a big difference there. Smiley Smiley wave Hi Rena. wave

I'm looking forweard to seeing the old place again, thankyou very much, it would be good to see your pictures.  Did you ever know someone, I think he was called Richard, can't remember the surname, who worked at the naval base?  And someone else I knew back then was Bill Kerr, he ran a cafe on Portland called the Tea Cosy, after I left Portland he bought a cafe at Weymouth, him & me teamed up to do gigs together, do you know (or know of) him?  I was quite active in the methodist church in Portland, the vicar there was the Rev Collingwood, did you know him?  I remember a big old ship at Weymouth, it was called the Astrid, I think, it was a sort of youth training ship done out as ships would be 100 years ago, it may also have taken commercial bookings from big companies, & done tall ships races & events. I remember someone called Topsy Toner, (he was in the band Arish Mell), & he worked on that ship.  There was someone else in that band called Nigel, he was a brilliant fiddle player, I learned the tune Maiden's prayer from him, Fizzle likes that tune.  And once I played at a session in or near Weymouth with Dave Swarbrick's nephew, Dave Swarbrick is an internationally famous folk fiddler, & his nephew was pretty damn good too.

I think I could have seen that Gut that ran the Tea-Costy cafe Joe as we used to go in there but cant say I actually knew him though, and no knowledge of the other guys except again I didnt know the vicar, as I only worked at Portland Joe actually lived in Wyke-Regis and Weymouth. I know the Astrid well we had a day-trip out on her we being the members of Weymouth video club and it was a great day out too and I can recall hearing that name Topsy bandied about that day and that could have been 17 or 18 years ago now, but I remember it well, dont know the others though joe.

Don't waste time writing, Sunny - get out into the cold morning mists and the rain and start taking photos of Weymouth with your new camera!  headbang

Haha, he won't like that, even if it was a typo!!  He wasn't a gut, he was small & skinny!!  Even I was relatively skinny back then!

no knowledge of the other guys... I only worked at Portland Joe actually lived in Wyke-Regis and Weymouth.

Isn't Wyke Regis the real Weymouth, as opposed to Melcomb Regis (sp?), the so called pretender to the name of Weymouth?

I know the Astrid well we had a day-trip out on her we being the members of Weymouth video club and it was a great day out too and I can recall hearing that name Topsy bandied about that day and that could have been 17 or 18 years ago now, but I remember it well, dont know the others though joe.

Glad you know of it & him, that proves I was there & not just pretending to have lived there!!  You must have been very up to date to have a video, when I lived on Portland I had no video, no car, no nothing except the basics that came with rented furnished accommodation.

OK, I appreciate you don't know Portland that well, but do you know of Joslin Court, at the bottom of a very steep hill called Tillycoombe?  That was where I first lived on Portland.  And do you know of a street called Mallams, I rented a lovely old stone cottage there, near the top.  And do you know of Ventnor Road, I rented a ground floor flat in one of the big houses up there?

I was interested to see on the Rightmove property site that a big old house, the Captain's House, in Fortuneswell, had finally been completed after years & years of being empty? I think it was started by a sea captain, who ran out of money (or something); the house stood empty as a shell, not finished, but now it is, & is lived in.

Hi Joe bet he would think I was queer writing that (misspelt)  a senior moment already eh, I am going to enquire where these places are you mention I dont know but I will find out for you, I do remember Tillycoombe road Joe and I have heard of the others, think Mallams is close to the Square and the sea I will get a local map of Portland then I can keep up with you. They still argue about Wyke being the real weymouth  but I`m not sure.  We used to go to the Captain`s house to serve there a few times Joe I believe it is lived in now, will find all these things out in time when I get back to you ok.
